This may be a dumb question but...

Just wondering if anyone knows if this has a biological basis? I am guessing it does-you know feeling the urge to procreate, so to speak, when the apple is ripe!

This happens to me every month at this time. And I usually have a medium to low sex drive so I can really tell the difference.

Just curious...

I don't know for sure - but I am the same way.

It would only make sense though right?

Your hormones gear up to make a baby and sex is required (according to your body) to make a baby. So therefore your desire for sex would go up....right?

:LOL

AdinaL-Right! Maybe someone who knows the biological component will enlighten me. But it does only make sense.

I believe this does indeed have a biological basis. The hormones that prepare the egg to be released also have the effect of increasing libido. Testosterone increases as the egg matures, so that is partly responsible. Progesterone also begins to increase, and that is also partly responsible. According to this link

http://www.progesterone.nu/libido.asp

the brain also plays a large part of sexual drive. But as a person with severe hormone imbalances, I know without doubt that my lack of libido is related to the improper balance of hormones that keeps me from ovulating.

Nemmer-Thanks so much for this great interesting link. It gives me so much power and confidence to feel like I know my bod better. I'm sorry that you've had such a hard time with your hormone balance.

I can almost tell exclusively by my sex drive now if I'm ovulating. This is a good thing as we head toward ttc#2.

Thanks again

I've always read that it not only does it increase sexual desire, but that it can increase sexual attractiveness through the release of pheremones.

Alas, This doesn't seem to be true for me. I have a pretty high libido, but not really around O.

I saw a show on PBS once, Evolution, I think? they did a study of young women out clubbing. They would dress more sexily while ovulating.Show more skin. More tank tops and mini skirts.

This is why natural family planning would not have worked for me as BC. You are only supposed to have intercourse while not ovulating! Try and get me into the mood when I am not ovulating. Not easy. Not natural.

You can use natural fertility awareness, and a barrier method. Condoms, diaphrams.

I personally wouldn't do it otherwise either.

Glad to hear that you all have experienced the same thing. We take advantage of it when we can!
