If you have or are having difficulty becoming pregnant, chances are pretty good that iodine deficiency is your culprit. Your whole body needs iodine and the highest concentrations can be found in your uterus and ovaries among others. Hypothyroidism A.K.A. Iodine deficiency can cause menstrual irregularities, decreased sex drive, miscarriage, failure to ovulate, premature childbirth and pre-eclampsia. Some women experience an autoimmune version of hypothyroidism in which their bodies are producing killer cells which attacks their own tissues (including their own thyroid or an embryo). If you have symptoms of hypothyroidism and have experienced a miscarriage then you definitely need to begin supplementing with the list of vitamins provided on the I'm deficient, Now what? page.Though Iodine is the number one supplement it works synergistically with other vitamins, minerals and nutrients. The consequences of not resolving your deficiencies is the likeliness that you will not be able to maintain a pregnancy without treatment.

Deficiency of iodine seems to cause more damage in developing embryos and in fact, in pregnant women iodine deficiency causes abortions and stillborns. It is not cretinism alone that holds risks from deficiency, but the very survival of the infant itself. Adequate iodine may also provide protection from infection and vaccine damage. In a study done on 617 infants between the ages of 6 weeks and six months, in an iodine deficient area, it was shown that with the addition of 100 mg of iodine oil to the diet of newborns, that the death rate of infants was markedly lower than for those without any supplementation.

Hypothyroidism is a common cause of infertility in women and incompetent sperm in men. Many childless couples have the misfortune to be hypothyroid (one or both partners) and yet not have an abnormal lab value (T3 or T4 test) to convince the doctor to prescribe thyroid replacement therapy.

So glad you posted this....

I was diagnosed with iodine defiency (and, most like with hypothyroidism when I see the doctor this week). We are always told that eating salt to which iodine has been added is enough. However, some doctors estimate that 90% of people in some areas of the US are actually deficient.

I hope that this is what has caused out secondary infertility... Whether or not, this is something more people should hear about in order to have healthy babies. (And t be healthy themselves... It can be hard to realize that the symptoms one thinks are causeb by lacking sleep, extended nursing, etc., can actually be hypothyroidism.)

Mama to a little lady and always praying for more.

This is really interesting. At some point during the fall I had this conversation with my TCM provider. I generally only use sea salt and asked if the lack of iodine could be a problem even though my T# and T$ came back okay I think they were not ideal for conception but my GP wouldn't medicate. Anyway, the TCM provider said she didn't know if it was contributing to my problem. However, anecdotally she had treated several women who only used sea salt. I went out and bought a container of sea salt with iodine added, just in case.

Is there anything harmful about taking iodine when you don't need it? (I have no idea if I do or not. My thyroid tests have always come back fine, but I don't know the actual numbers.)

Please pm me if you have any questions as I tried subbing and don't get notifications of new posts..

Hello,

I know that this is an old thread however I find it very interesting. I have been dealing with infertility for over 7 years and was just diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. My fertility Dr has placed me on 50 mcg of synthroid. I am also taking iodine to combat this illness. I have been fighting with my Dr for years telling him that I have an under active thyroid. My fertility specialist recently went to a fertility seminar and they said any women who has a TSH over 2.5 should be placed on thyroid meds. My TSH is 3.11 so he put me on 50 mcg synthroid I prefer to be on Armour but he would not approve it. I am so glad I ran across this thread. I am currently taking Lugol's iodine and just recently order iodoral iodine tablets but I have not received those as of yet because I ordered those thru the mail. I really hope and pray that iodine is the answer to all of my infertility.

Did your Dr tell you to take the Iodine with the synthroid?  When I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism my Chiropractor recommended that I take Iodine, but I was a little nervous to add it to the Synthroid.  Somewhere I had read some negative comments about taking it with the drugs so after i bought it i was scared to take it.  I'm so tempted to take it now, but a little fearful since we just did an IVF and are in the TWW now. Last year I was pregnant with twin boys and we went into preterm labor at about 23 wks and I wonder if this could have been part of our problem.  Makes me so mad that they don't test for that kind of thing after something like that.  Can't cry over spilled milk! Can a Dr actually order a test for Iodine levels, I'm assuming so???  Thanks so much for sharing this information Christsavesall.

After 5 failed IUI's & 6 failed IVF's we threw in the towel w/ ART and then got a NATURAL miracle BFP! Hoping and praying it is finally our take home baby!  Mother to our twins boys in heaven -lost at 22.5wks on 6/20/09 and 1 other little angel in heaven.

Our Miracle has arrived... Caden James...

Hello Blueyezz4!

No! my Dr did not tell me to take iodine with the synthroid I am taking it on my own. Based upon my on research I decided to take iodine to help combat my issue. Also, Iodine can help prevent miscarriagea and aid in implanation. If I were you I would take it. Please research the importance of iodine during pregnancy and you will find a host of information. Good luck to you and I hope you get a BFP. : )

Prettyasanangel -   Thanks for the info!  I think what scared me was the fact that I'm not totally convinced that my thyroid issues aren't immune related and a lot of the things I read about iodine says that if it is immune related iodine can make things worse, so that was what scared me.  At age 29 I lost my gallbladder and I am a 5'5" slim female and then when they tell me that my thyroid is having issues at age 33 it starts to make you wonder.  Oh, and I also have a positive ANA (anti-nuclear antibodies) which a Rheumatologist follows, but the next time I see her I might mention this to her to see what she says.  All Drs do is look at me and think that I look so healthy they don't seem to give you the time of day or they think you are crazy for questioning them.  Who knows.  I did take one iodine pill though tonight so I might slowly add it in here and there, we'll see.  Thanks again!
