Welcome to the FEB 2010 charting to avoid and fertility awareness thread. We are all at different stages in family planning and our own fertility. Some of us are very ardently Charting to Avoid (CTA); most are CTA but would be thrilled with a BFP; and we even have a few who are not CTA but are also not TTC, and continue to hang out here.

If you would like to be added or removed (or have anything changed) from the roll call list, please let me know by PMing me. PM me if you'd like to start next month's thread.

If you did not post in January, you may have been deleted from the list. If you were mistakenly deleted, or you would like to be added/removed, please PM me and let me know. I cannot promise to make changes requested in the thread, but I will try to get to everything.

You must post in Feb. if you want to be on the March list!

Summary of FAM rules (sympto-thermal)

Pre-ovulation rules:

1) First 5 Days Rule: You are safe the first 5 days of your menstrual cycle if you had an obvious temp shift 12-16 days before.

2) Dry day rule: You are safe to DTD after 6PM if you have been dry all day.

Post ovulation rules:

1) Peak day rule: the last day of fertile mucous is called the peak day (the day before your mucous begins to dry up). You are safe to DTD on the fourth consecutive day after the peak day. If another patch of more fertile mucous appears, start your count over.

2) Temperature shift rule: You are safe the evening of the third consecutive day your temp is above your coverline. If your temp falls at or below the coverline during the 3 day count, begin your count again.

BOTH rules must be satisfied to be considered in your infertile phase.

How to set a coverline:

When you see a temperature shift of at least 0.2 degrees F above the highest of the previous 6 temps, draw a line 0.1 degrees F above that highest temp.

No problem, I went back through January's thread. I'm hoping I didn't leave anyone out. Getting the first cycle down is wonderful and I personally think it really is fun to be able to keep track. I'm still trying to keep track of secondary signs (like acne, headaches, etc..) to see if I can find any real pattern that way. This is my 3rd cycle since starting to chart again.

The hardest part for me is weekends when I don't have to get up at 6, and Becca has been up in the night lately. So I get up at 2 and then at 4.. and then the alarm does off at 6 and I turn it off and roll-over. Today I temped once at 5 and once at 7:30 when I finally got up.

Good luck!

AFM: Had a meltdown on DH today, I think that abstaining entirely during the fertile period might be best. It just makes me angry and sad to have to "figure" out protection when I really just want a baby. He gets upset with me because he see's waiting as being best for our family and I'm mad at him because I've been waiting since DD was 18 months old for our second! She turns 4 on Thursday. Anyway, having my own personal pity party. Certainly makes me think that O is going to be here soon.

lyterae: I know what you mean about avoiding just seeming easier. Any other way and I start getting my hopes up that *maybe* there was an oops in there, and there's a chance. Even when realistically there really isn't.

AFM: I'm lying low this month. I told DH at the beginning of the cycle that I was toying with not charting because it's getting too emotional and he had kind of a back and forth response. And then I started temping anyways. But now... I just missed two temps in a row, I'm on day 11ish or something like that, and DH and I dtd without protection last night, so my CF interpretations are off. DH and I have been having some really good talks lately that make me think he's almost ready. He even said to me today "I know, I'm sorry I'm still scared", which is a step forward if at least he's admitting that there isn't really any other reason anymore.

On that note-- I'm feeling like I may have been ripped off a bit. I almost never get EWCM, or I get it like... once. And now today (day 12, I just checked) while going to the bathroom I noticed a.... stretchy fluid. But I don't know how to tell if it was CF or... other byproduct from DTD. I didn't pick any up, but it was stretching on it's on a good 3+ inches. Would sperm or lube stretch like that? I didn't think so, but honestly don't know. Figure that the ONE time I get good CF I can't even truly count it.

For me, sperm really breaks instead of stretches.

I remembered to take my temp this morning! (Only took me 13 days to remember!) It was in the realm of my normal pre-O temps before baby, so maybe this will work. I am interested to see how my cycles will be now - still BFing round the clock. I have a feeling I won't see AF again for another 6 months. That'll make a long chart!! (But not my longest - had an 8 month annov. I ended with Provera.)

And if you do any edits Lyterae, we CTA for 12 months before getting pregnant.

I'm Kellie :, married to Chris , and mom to one baby girl (7/12/09).

I'm here. I'm still waiting for PP AF. I think that might be soon. I had a long run of EW, then a bunch of dry days. I have been on an emotional rollercoaster this week, and tonight I am cramping and tired. Breaking out too. And I have a plugged duct, which I got right before I got PPAF last time around.

Here's hoping. This last month has been a hormone nightmare.

Thanks for the new thread!

I think I'm starting to gear up to O. Low temps, EW, spotting...here's my chart. Hoping nothing throws it off this time.

From the Jan thread...

Anyway, food for thought!
Interesting. I think I'm with MW that this particular study doesn't mean much...I wasn't able to access the full text but they followed 250 women for 2 cycles, relying on self-reporting of fiber intake, and think they've concluded something meaningful? It seems to me like this study was sort of a "hey, look, fiber might have something to do with ovulation, someone should do a real study on it." But it does make sense, maybe that is one way fiber decreases cancer risk, by lowering the hormone levels and making for fewer ovulatory cycles in one's life.

Thank you for including me!

Nothing exciting going on here, just hanging out to see if this cycle will be 20-some days, like two ago, or 53days, like the last one. Sigh. I love being unpredictible. My CM seems to be recovering from the IUD (Mirena) nicely, though, so I'm enjoying that.

Had a strange conversation with my husband the other night; things were heating up, and I'd had some vaguely creamy CM that day, so I'd said that I was interested, but he would need to withdraw (which is fine, and the plan) and he commented later that he'd been surprised I hadn't thrown an "unless......." in there. Funny, because our daughter (2yo) was completely unplanned, and it's very important to him that our second child have some modicum of planning behind it. We had a long and interesting and good conversation because of it; I'm glad it happened.

Is there any way, when you click into a thread, to get to the last message that you read, or do these boards not track that?

lyterae ~ I felt the same way a few months ago. To be honest, if I thought my dh was still dead set on preventing, I'd probably feel the same way now. I felt like there was no point in dtd during my fertile period if there wasn't at least a chance I could be pg. Dh was the one wanting to prevent, not me. After we had our discussion about it, I told him it was his responsibility to make sure I didn't get pg if that's what he wanted. I wasn't going to help him because that wasn't my desire. That way I didn't have to worry about bc in the moment. It was all on my dh. Oh, and I told him there was no way I'd dtd with a condom so his only options were abstinence or w/d. I really don't think it's fair for a man to expect a woman to take on that responsibility when she doesn't want to. As long as everyone is honest, the prevention should be the responsibility of the person who wants to prevent, imnsho.

jj ~ Semen wouldn't stretch that much. If I remember correctly, TCOYF says semen doesn't even stretch an inch. Maybe that's where Weschler gets the 1-inch stretch rule for EWCF.

To those planning to temp without getting the first PPAF, I think most of us didn't bother temping until after that first PPAF. Charting CF was a lot easier and works as long as you are very diligent about following the rules. First, establish your PP/BF BIP (only dry or sticky but never wetter than that). Then whenever you have any CF wetter than your BIP, use precautions.

kcroto42 ~ If you go to a thread on the boards and click on it, it goes to the first post on the page. If you click on the link in your email notification, it should go to the last unread post

No time for personals right now, I hope everyone is having a good day.

I'm still tired from this weekend and wishing I had a day to just lay around in bed and sleep.

CD15, with a temp rise today (at least in comparison to the past couple of days). Waiting to see what happens tomorrow, things definitely feel like they are drying up again.

I'd like to join! I'm due to start my fourth AF since DD2. DD2 is a year old now and no longer breastfeeding. Each cycle has been 29 days and I definitely get skin changes before AF. I also find that I am "in the mood" around ovulation. DH WDs.

A couple weird things are happening this cycle though. I got a clogged duct (more like infected, I think it was pus, not milk coming out) and I haven't been nursing for two months now. Also, I just had a whole bunch of creamy mucus and AF is due to start in 2 days. I've never had that before, but I'm breaking out so I'm sure that my body won't let me down I'm not temping yet, but my cycles appear to be very regular.

How long has it been since you had your IUD removed? I've been a couple cycles now w/o my paragard and have just what you described the 50-something and the 20-something.

How nice to have that convo! I really hope that my husband will come around. Neither of our two were planned and I'm SO excited to actually plan #3. The spacing feels/seems right for me now (I think a Feb baby next year would be great) but DH wants to wait until we move which is... who knows when... approx 3 years, I don't want to be in my mid-late 30's when the next one comes or I think I'll just give up.

Anyhow, I have to go and see if I can turn 'quiet time' into nap time.

How long after pregnancy does it take for your period to stay steady? I had several months of 29 days, then one month of 28 days, and now it's at 27 days. I suppose I'm happy that my LP is now over 9 days (10 now), but I'm kind of wondering when things will steady out. My son is 6 months and I've had my period for about 5 months.

Mother to a crazy wonderful son born 7-11-09 and A very determined amazing daughter born 5-3-12!

Just last month, actually! I charted for the month before to get the hang of the system, and then had the IUD yanked on 1/20. I'm really quite thrilled, not just because I would really (really really really) like to be pregnant again, but because I was having some pretty sketchy issues with the IUD (I had the Mirena). So, much better this way. Also, nice to not have cervix pain in (ahem) certain positions.

I also decided to complete my transformation to hippie-dom and get a Divacup; absolutely changed my life. So, it's been a good month so far.

so funny. I love mine. I started with the keeper in '05 and when that got lost I moved on to the Diva, I like it but wish I knew how to eliminate discoloration.
It's nice having only ONE thing for month after month after month! Once in a blue moon I'll use a cloth pad for back up but those are all left over from post partum

Hopping in here today!

Gorgeous chart Annie!

BlueOne-- That seems pretty steady to me! Were your cycles always exact before? I've had even cycles right from my very first one, but they still fluctuate between 26-28 days. I just kind of assume that was normal and wouldn't think twice about it unless it was say a week or more that it was changing each month.

I am back again this month! I also have a diva and I LOVE IT, when I first heard about them I was very scared to try them but now I love it. I have been temping and charting for 2 months now, but ff cant detect when I o'ed this month I would really like to know because I have NO clue and I am still trying to convince my husband that when done properly this is a good form of birth control. We now use a condom all month long no matter what . I also don't know how to link my chart for you guys to see so you can help me, can anyone let me know how to do that? Thanks!

(But not my longest - had an 8 month annov. I ended with Provera.)

And if you do any edits Lyterae, we CTA for 12 months before getting pregnant.
Yay for remembering to temp! I think the hardest part of me is that B. usually wakes me up and so I roll out of bed to go see her without stopping to temp first. I think 12 months is fantastic, we made it.. 5 cycles before we got pregnant. Complete and total user error, it took almost 4 years for DH to agree to try FAM again. I think it's really only because he's okay with an "oops", he's just not okay with trying.

I think I'm starting to gear up to O. Low temps, EW, spotting...here's my chart. Hoping nothing throws it off this time.
Crossing my fingers for O this month for you!

Here's hoping. This last month has been a hormone nightmare.
I hope that things go better for you this month.

That's awesome! I didn't even know there was such a feature.

Welcome! I'll add you to the list.

Nothing much going on here, just trying to do personals and update while I have time. It's only Monday and I'm already dreaming of Saturday.

In FF on your "main" page there is a "home page setup" button above your chart. If you click on that page it will take you to another page that has your FF link.

Alternately, when you have your chart open on the left hand side there is a tab for "homepage" if you click on that it will bring up your homepage as well.

I hope that's clear enough, sorry if it's not.
