I had my mirena placed two years ago, right after dd 4 was born. I have not had one single period since then, so it has been over 3 years since I have had a period. I was never able to completely lose my baby weight after the mirena was inserted and I have gained 20+ pounds in the last year. I am super hormonal, and have all the symptoms of thyroid disorder, but my blood work comes up clear, and now my vision is deteriorating rapidly, (I got new glasses less than 6 months ago, and I need new ones now). After doing research online, it looks like all of these symptoms can be attributed to the mirena, and I just really want it gone so I am having it taken out tomorrow, but my question is, what do I use now?

I have no luck on BCP, I have 2 pill babies. I have also had depo, and while it was awesome while I was on it, I bled for 2 months when I stopped getting it, and my next child was born with severe disabilites. (It is most likely totally unrelated, but I just don't want to take the risk, y/k?) I don't trust myself enough to chart reliably either. So, what else is out there that works? I really don't want to end up with another surprise, but I can't do mirena any longer.

What about a copper IUD? Great efficacy, no hormones. You do run the risk of heavier bleeding, but for me it was a good method when I used it, I'm (strongly) considering it again.

What about condoms? They are 98% effective with perfect use. They are cheap, easy to use, obviously don't require a precription, have almost no side effects, are hormone free, and can be stopped at any time. They also make for very tidy sex

I had the mirena inserted after dd was born and had it for almost three years. I had horrible side effects and had it removed when we were ready to try again... which immediately led to 2 m/c. I'm pregnant now, due any day. As soon as this one is born, I've decided on the copper iud. I've vowed to avoid hormonal birth control forever, but I'm terrified of a surprise baby. Aside from DH getting snipped (which we're not quite ready for), this is the best option I've come up with.
