When I got my Paragard IUD I did a lot of research. Paragard was the only IUD that was considered safe. I had it for 14 years without a single problem. no heavy periods except the first few months after I got it and no other issues . I would NEVER use an IUD that put hormones into me like a birth control pill. that was the whole idea of getting an IUD, no hormones. My research also told me that the Paragard IUD was safer than any other method of birth control & 99.9% effective at preventing pregnancy. Mirena is using the general stat for IUD effectiveness. they do not refer to the effectiveness of the Mirena itself. I no longer need birth control but my daughter has the Mirena & is having problems so I've been checking things out. What I've found so far is that Paragard is the only hormone free IUD on the market and the Mirena is giving the IUD a bad reputation.

I had Mirena for years with no side effects at all. It was the paragard that gave me intensely painful cramps, extended periods, heavy bleeding, and borderline anemia from having such long periods. From talking with other moms, even naturally minded mamas, they mostly agree with me that paragard is giving IUDs the bad rep. Yes, PG is the only hormone free birth control on the market, but I cannot tolerate it physically. However, Mirena is the lowest dose hormonal birth control, even lower than the mini pill. This is effective in preventing pregnancy because the hormones are distributed locally rather than having to be digested. Hope you can figure out a solution.
