Now, I know as soon as I hit "SUBMIT" on this, AF is gonna show up, but . . .

My DH had a vasectomy last year. He went in to be tested several times, and got the "all clear" from his doctor. So, I am now over 1 week late & am getting nervous, but there's like now way, right??? I am not usually late. THis would mark the longest cycle I've recorded, save 1 time about 7 years ago.

This would not be a hppy surprise.

don't know the official number but AFAIK it's less than one percent. You're probably safe, but I can understand the stress. Have you done a pg test??

ugh, typos changed the context sorry

The younger the guy, the higher the rate of failure..... fwiw.

Dh was 24 at his big V and they made sure he knew this.

Of course, I was already pregnant (didn't know it!!! found out 2 weeks after the big V)....

We are planning to have my tubes tied during my c/s to make *double* sure

My mom has a friend who got pregnant years after her dh got sniped. He didn't want to doubt his wife, but wasn't sure it was his until after the birth and they had a dna test.

OMG- that's horrible, and also horribly funny! and a little bit understandable.
How'd things go after the pregnancy- was there trouble over it?

Ok, what's with the doubting husbands. I'd be pissed if my DH ever doubted the paternity of his children. Seriously. It would become a HUGE issue.

This is what we were told... the chances of a failure after completing post surgical testing (showing no viable sperm) is less than 1%. I don't know if all offices are the same, but they told DH they would test after 90 days because it takes that long for the "demons to leave the building".

I've heard of a few people getting PG after the V, but their husbands never followed up with the testing... come to found out, they still had active swimmers! WHOOPS! I wouldn't call that a failure... I'd call that an unsuccessful procedure

I believe they did do the follow ups. Their marrige didn't have any effects from it. I guess it is understandable. I talked to my mom and she said it happened about 5 years after the vasectomy. I could totally see how it would be hard for a husband to believe.

My sister got pregnant by a man who assured her he had had a vacectomy before their relationship started (he had 3 teenage children at that point). He got tested, and had low sperm count, but definately active swimmers (and there is no doubt the child was his anyway...he looks just like his father and NOTHING like us). And we are all fertile beyond belief in my family, so it is no surprise to me given the sperm test. So either his V failed (they tried to say that he might have 3 vas deferons) or he was lying (which I do not doubt : )

They ended up getting married and then had one more child. Then she got her tubes tied, as she had 4 children and was done.

It depends how it's done from what I heard. My dh had a small piece of each tube removed, the ends tied and than burned. Doc had 100% success rate, dh never did get his checked though...

My cycles haven't been right since he got it done, my weird body hasn't figured out it can't get pregnant anymore yet I think :LOL. I've been a few days late and weird pms symptoms too but eventually af always shows.

I'm sticking around too. DH has an appointment next week to find out about getting one. He's been told they won't do it unless the guy is 30 or has 2 kids of his own. Stupid Navy. DH meets neither criteria but we are hoping he can convince them anyways. I've had lots of problems with BC and with my blood pressure and weight the doc told me getting pg would be a VERY bad idea.

Good luck!

They still really stress it's permanent, dh had to tell the urologist about 100 times yes we are sooo sure and yes we are perfectly ok with it being permanent!

Make sure a urologist does it, dh told me a few family practice clinic horror stories from guys he talked to before getting it done. Gotta love military clinics! And one guy passed his test but got his wife pregnant a year later, I'm assuming either the lab waited to long to do the test or something wasn't done right. Make sure if he gets it done the lab tests the ur...specimen within 30 minutes.

Amen to that, pilesoflaundry. DH is saying if they want to do it in a military clinic he'd rather go find a specialist and just pay for it ourselves. Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost?

OT
side ramble here--- do not get your tt especially during a section, you are asking for trouble I repeat please do not!!! No one tried to talk me out of it and I can't believe here on mothering that so many mamas are choosing this method which hurts women.

do more research, if your dr suggested this, did he tell you which method he will use and all the risks involved??? including ectopic pregnancy, surgical adhesions, and heavier periods, did he tell you that statistically you are way more likely to have a hysterectomy in the future???
RANT here 'heavier periods' means every 19 days that last 9 days and need several boxes of pads and a box or two of super tampons and no sex life for a couple weeks a month and the latest on hormone shots to get my Endemetrial ablation and taking the birth control pill for a couple years before that and fighting my insurance company to pay for bc & the ponstel for the cramping & dirarrhea while passing clots (cause I had my tt LOL when it would be convienent) it is SO not worth it I had normal periods before my tl

make him get the vas.

Wow. I guess if you're meant to have more children eh?
Dh is scheduled for a V in less than 2 wks.
I'm nervous now. I've been holding off sex, and he is going crazy. But I so don't want to get pg...I've been in bedrest both times, and don't think I can handle it again!!!

So would I! :

I just had my tubes totally removed in February. I heard all the horror stories, but was having a scheduled c-section and wasn't going to leave birth control options up to my husband so went through with the tubal. The doc who did mine TOTALLY removed the tubes though. So far, so good.

I only know of one post vas baby. Dh got his in January, and got the all clear. Actually, I had been talking about getting my tubes tied, and mentioned the possible side effects, and he basically forbade me to, and made his appt. quickly!!

My DH got snipped last summer at the ripe old age of 29. He had to really emphatically assert to the urologist that we do not want more children! DH wanted to get one when he was ~26 (we weren't planning on having a child) but he got the run around on the insurance referral and then we moved cross country anyway (and got pregnant a few weeks later :LOL).

He did go back for the follow-up visit and got the all clear but we had a paranoid moment. This will probably have an unbelievable "friend-of-a-friend" sound to it but I was late this past winter and my best friend's husband told me his best friend had the V and his wife got pregnant. They were having marriage issues anyway so his friend was convinced the wife was cheating and got DNA testing once the baby was born. It was his.

I told the story to DH and he asked (which seems so painfully obvious now) why the friend didn't go in for a sperm count once he heard his DW was pg? I mean, if the swimmers are there then there's a good likelihood the fellow is responsible for impregnanting his wife! :LOL

Anyway, AF eventually showed for me, and I'm hoping she continues to. I occasionally freak myself out worrying about a possible failure but DH says he was shown how much tube was removed and then they were knotted and burned so I'm thinking it's just not going to happen. *whew*

dh had the big v in december, six months after the birth of our 3rd and last child . But he never went in for the two post-procedure sperm counts. Just couldn't bring himself to put the sample in the cup and drive it to the lab. He figures if we were to get pregnant despite the Vasectomy then G-d woudl be trying to tell us something and we'd be blessed with another child.

He's 43 ftr and its been almsot six months since the procedure and AF has been back a while and shows up on time every month.

Still waiting. :

I'm on cycle day 38--normally I am like 28 or 29 days.

For the record, DH is 40 & he went back for abour 4 follow-ups--there kept being 1 or 2 sperm, so the doc made him keep coming (pardon the pun) until it was all clear.

I have out of town family here. If AF doesn't show up by Tuesday, when they leave, I will do a preg. test.

Oh, and I am defintitely NOT cheating on him!!!

Day 40 and nothing happening. I am so sad and scared and confused.

My company is still here and I don't want to test until they go.

DH is being weird about it--we just don't even know what to say to each other.

I found one statistic that gave a failure rate of 1 in 2000 vasectomies. So, it can happen, I suppose, but DH was vigilant about getting tested & the doctor said he was fine.

I am also freaking out bec. I had an x ray and an MRI done on my foot in the past month.

Have never wanted AF so much as I do right now.

Quee - stress CAN keep you from ovulating. Just FWIW. When we were ttc dd, I didn't O for six months; there was LOTS of extra stress in our lives just then. I had a bunch of long, anovulatory cycles. One was over fifty days. I bet even the stress of having an MRI and an X ray, and the problem with your foot, could delay or stop ovulation.

Hugs on this. It's no fun to be where you're at!
