Dh and I are starting to think about post-partum birth control and I'm really perplexed! My understanding is that while bfing, the birth control options are:
-Copper IUD
-Mirena IUD
-Progesterin only pills
-Barrier methods (sponge, etc)
Are there any others that I'm forgetting?

I'm considering the Mirena IUD or the progesterin-only pills, but am wondering how the Mirena IUD works? My understanding is that the copper IUD works not by preventing fertilization, but by preventing the fertilized embryo from implanting, thus causing you to "abort" the embryo. Is this correct? Does the Mirena IUD work in the same way? Thanks!

The hormones in Mirena keep the uterine lining thin, thus reducing the ability for the egg to implant. (An added benefit for mom: almost no monthly bleeding for most Mirena users. )

The "aborting" factors of copper are a last resort, the copper makes the uterus "inhospitable" to sperm killing most of them as the first line of defense.

Mirena with the hormones works in a different way, the progeterine in local to the uterus not all over your body like the pill.
