so a friend and i are opening up a new and used baby/kids store. we'll sell some new clothes, accesories, etc. but mostly NICE resale clothing and baby gear. mostly brand name stuff with no stains, nothing too faded or pilly, etc. so, here is what i want to know... how much would pay for these things in excellent used/like new condition:

onsies or tees
pants/overalls/sweats
sweaters or jackets
shoes

**also, what brands would you suggest for NEW, eco-groovy, cute, but not boutique-price items? (i.e. no $20 onsies or $30 blankets unfortunately!)

i know mdc has some thrifty mommas, so i'd love your input! thanks!

Congratulations on your new business!!

I would pay max (in order of your list) if items are in excellent condition for baby/toddler items:
$2-$3
$4/$4/$2
$5-$10 depending on brand
$5 depending on brand (maybe up to $10 for Robeez)

We get a lot of clothes from friends but also do a lot of our buying at garage sales or the thrift stores, so I'm basing those prices on what I've paid for used items.

1- 2$ onsies or tees
4$ pants/overalls/sweats
5$ sweaters or jackets
$10 (robeez) shoes

Don't base your stats on me I am SUPER SUPER CHEAP.
This is hard because just about everything we have is a hand me down. I would LOVE second hand diapers. Especially organic diapers! My dream store.

I buy almost all my baby/kid stuff used at yard sales, consignment sales, and internet (ebay and MDC). I have found a lot of awesome stuff at really great prices, usually less than my local baby/kid-stuff resale stores.

Here are some comments from a super-thrifty mama:

The baby/kid-stuff resale stores charge half of full retail price. So if Gymboree lists a shirt at $20, the resale shop sells it for $10. Ha. I never shop at the resale shop. I can find the same Gymboree shirt at a yard sale for $1 or at a local consignment sale (big local event held twice a year where hundreds of families sell their used kid stuff at super cheap prices) for maybe between $2-$5.

So if you're thinking name brand kid resale shop, I think 1/2 price of retail is pretty much the going rate, at least from what I've seen, but I think you need to be sure that the used stuff is in really truely excellent condition. ANy holes, stains, imperfections, just won't sell for that price, or you coudl have a bargain rack for the stuff that's really cute but maybe not quite perfect.

Sorry, I can't think of any suggestions right now for new stuff other than perhaps some WAHM soft soled shoes.

onsies or tees $2
pants/overalls/sweats $5
sweaters or jackets $7
shoes $7

I'm assuming those are very good quality brands. The resale shop here has similar prices, but then also has 1/2 price sales every once in a while where you can really rack up!

Oh man - I have paid that little, but I have also paid $50 or more for a used dress (Oilily) or $10 for a t-shirt. I think it totally depends on the brand.

My only suggestion is making things look really nice - so you can get more $$ for it. I mean making sure it is pressed and hanging neatly on cute hangers, good lighting, etc. - basic merchandising stuff. The nicer it is merchandised the more people will pay.

Unless I didn't quite understand the question properly.... Hope this helps.

If you do not mind white, you could order organic cotton clothing from Dharma Trading... and put your own store labels on it. The pricing should be very competitive for baby clothing. (Though now that I think of it... white is not a good color for baby clothing) But I would use the Dharma pricing for comparison.

I buy used Janie and Jack on eBay and this is what I'm usually willing to pay for something in excellent condition:

For onsies and tees I will pay up to $4
Pants/Overalls/Sweats up to $10
Sweaters/Jackets: up to $8 for a sweater, higher for a coat or jacket.
Shoes up to $15

I usually try to keep it around $20 for a pants/onsie/sweater outfit.
