Sell on Etsy? Talk about it here

Due to MDC user agreement, please do not mention your Esty store name here!

Hi all! My store has been up for about two months now and I really love selling my sewn items through Etsy!

Some exciting news... One of my items was showcased in a blog yesterday and it sold in less than an hour after the post went live! :

Ooooh! Congrats!!

One of my items was in a treasury and got loads of views but didn't sell. Right now the main thing I sell are hair pretties for girls but I'm starting to add more variety to my shop.

I've been thinking about starting an etsy account. Tell me, what do like best about it. : I'm thinking the handling of money would be easier, but I hate to give up profits.

I've been on Etsy for almost 5 months now and business is really picking up! (In no small part owing to a wonderful MDC mama's amazing support - Thanks!!!) I like that it's sort of a community there, and that it provides a comfortable interface for artists and buyers to work together to make exactly what one wants. The fees are pretty low, that's nice; and it generates at least a fair amount of it's own traffic, so advertising isn't entirely on the individual. Anyway, I'm addicted! Yay, Etsy! :

Because FYT is reserved for tribes not hosted in other areas of MDC, I am moving this to the WAHM Well. Please continue to keep the UA in mind and not post in a way that can be construed as advertising. Thanks, mamas!

Oooo, I HEART etsy

I've been there a year as of last May. My shop is going fairly well, but I've decided to really step it up a notch and my new goal is to average 30 sales a month. I'd like to pay for a good chunk of my spring homebirth from my etsy sales. I sell mostly vintage items these days but I really want to get back into my hand dyed, recycled, respun cotton yarns (yeah, say that 5 times fast LOL ) over the winter.

Who asked what our favorite part of etsy was?

So many things seem to be my favorite part...the treasuries, the cheap listing and selling fees, the quick renewals to bring you to the top of the search engine, etc...

I really like the teams. I've joined a couple...eco etsy and etsy vintage street teams. I'm actually in major competition with most of the vintage street teams, but it really brings us closer being on the same team, then just passing by in the forums and feeling that competitive vibe, ya know. The teams hold sales and specials and create team treasuries to help promote each other. It brings us to a less competitive state and really helps to create friendships

I also really like it in the forums. It's huge (similar in size to MDC probably) so it's hard to get to know people personally in there but if you keep at it, you'll find it very fun, welcoming and, staying active in the forums seems to make a lot of people more sales, so I try to pop in there a few times a day.

I could talk about Etsy all day, but I'll spare y'all. I'd love to see your guy's shops and share some feedback if you want to pm me your link

I <3 Etsy. I am in the process of setting up a store for my stuff (knitted things) but I want to make sure I have some things in stock so I feel like I have to reach a certain amount before I draw back the curtains, you know?

I am wondering, when I buy from Etsy usually the seller includes business cards from other Etsy shops -- is that part of joining a team, or how would I get some cards to throw in? (I'm working on packaging ideas at the moment... so much fun!)

yes bin, most the times teams will put togteher little promo bags to include in their order. My teams do it seasonally but I never join in. I probably should though.

Or, if you just start a thread in business topics (or here maybe, unless it's against the rules) that you're looking for biz cards to include in your packages, you'll probably find many-a-shop owners who would love to send some out to you

I don't sell on Etsy. In fact, I've never even bought on Etsy. But, I'm looking for a pair of slippers for myself and thought I'd give it a try.
I'd love to support other MDC mammas so if you make/sell slippers please PM me.

I just meant that handling the money via etsy is way easier for me than figuring out how to do it on my own--I don't mind giving etsy a little bit to post my stuff and PayPal a little bit to eliminate the need for me to be able to accept credit cards and/or wait for checks/money orders to arrive before shipping.

Oh wow, I have been seriously considering opening an etsy store and would love to be a part of this tribe!

I have some technical questions, though. How do income taxes work? It's considered a cottage industry, right?

Also, how do you package your items? I would be selling clothes, mostly...how do customers like to receive them?

Thanks, you guys!

Oh, I totally agree with you Frog! I ahte keeping books, and a good part of it is automatically kept for me by etsy

icx, You collect/charge sales tax only on items you sell to your own state, you'll have to look at your states govt website to get all that info.

I package all my things with recycled material. I try to make my shop as eco-friendly as humanly possible , it also helps my bottom line since I'm not paying for shipping materials

Has anyone ever purchased a showcase on etsy? Did you feel like it was worth it?

There seems to be a debate about that, with most people coming down on the "not worth it" side. I'd suggest that you go and read through the forums. There's a wealth of info there. I read the forums for 2 weeks prior to even opening shop and it was (and remains) so helpful!
