Is nasal congestion a side effect of pregnancy? I wouldn't think so, but I'm beginning to wonder. It's the dead of winter here, no environmental allergens I'm aware of, and my nose is constantly dripping. I'm not sick, just sneezing more than usual and blowing my nose constantly. I have what feels like thick mucous sitting in my throat and nasal passages that I can't get rid of. It's making the nausea worse.

This is nothing like a cold or allergies that I've also experienced. It does not get better or worse. Just constant for many weeks, maybe a couple months now.

Yuck!!

Yes!!! And it is horrible. Most days I can barely breathe through my nose. I dread allergy season!

Ugh, seriously? I never experienced this with my first pregnancy. I agree it's awful. :

Yes, I had horrible post nasal drip all through the second trimester. It finally went away sometime during the third. I looked it up somewhere and read that it was indeed a pregnancy related thing. I suffered through it and always had a water bottle... sometimes it sent me puking to the bathroom though

My starts out as congestion and gets worse. I am trying very hard to keep tabs on things this time as last time, it turned in to pneumonia by the end.

Yes, it's definitely a pregnancy symptom. One I get every single time. It sucks.

I didn't have it with my DD either- but I sure have it now! I wake up in the morning with tons of post-nasal drip, which triggers the gag reflex, which makes me puke. Then I blow my nose all day long. Fun fun. I find that consuming large amounts of dairy makes it worse.

Yep, and it's gross! The post nasal drip has actually made me throw up several times in the morning, when it's all settled into the back of my throat. It's apparently a pretty common pregnancy symptom. The things they don't tell you in health class :-P

I'm right in the midst of chronic pregnancy congestion too. I'd heard of it as a pregnancy symptom before but I hadn't hady any problems with it in my previous two pregnancies. Bleh.

Oh yes! I get it with each pg. I'm either dripping, or I'm completely clogged and there's nothing in there to clog it! My sinuses just shrink and I can't breathe. Then they'll open up and I'm blowing like crazy. I'm perfectly healthy and have had this my entire pg. It's a pain and I can't wait for it to be over! Just a few more weeks! :

Me too! I believe it is the hormone relaxin - same thing that causes slow bowels and the loosening of the ligaments. Causes swelling in the sinuses. Ugh!

I'll join in with complaints! At night I'm snoring (aparently) and sleeping with my mouth open because my nose is so stuffed up, which makes my mouth incredibly dry. All the meds that typically help me with allergies and such have NO effect at all.

Yep-- and since the 2nd trimester, when it hardens and makes boogies, it gives me a bloody nose when I blow them out. Fun!

Yep, this is me too. I've been sneezing and blowing my nose all morning since about 4:30AM. It seems to come and go, pretty much since my bfp. I've had acupuncture, shiatsu, and done a lot of steams but it always comes back. It seems dry, cold air is the worst along with indoor heating which makes my nose bleed some. The best is that I've developed a mild case of tinnitus (ears ringing) from it.

Anyone know homeopathic remedies for these symptoms?

Ugh this is happening to me also! I had no idea it was actually a pregnancy symptom!

I've been boiling water with mint extract, fresh rosemary, tarragon and thyme, tenting a towel over my head and breathing it in. This seems to be helping it.

Wow. I had no idea this was so common. I figured I was the oddball It really does suck. Constant nose blowing is one thing, but the mucous that accumulates in my nasal passages-then drips down my throat. YUCK!! It's amazing I'm not puking, just gagging like crazy. I have my pillows stacked at night to keep my head elevated, but that puts more pressure on my neck and hips, which ache. And I have another 20 weeks to go.

This is exactly what I have, gross hard bloody snot. It does seem to be getting better now that I am moving just into the third trimester.

Oooh, I had that.

To sleep every night, I needed a Breathe Right (those things are AWESOME), saline nose drops, a humidifier, and some Vapo Rub (okay, I know it's supposedly not that great for you, but it helped me sleep).

So, I thought that I was just having this pregnancy congestion that I've been hearing about. But I woke up this morning feeling worse and my snot has turned yellowish, so I think that I definitely have a cold. I'm 5 weeks 2 days pregnant. Is there anything safe that I can take?
