My son came down with fifths disease when I was 8 wks pg as it was going around his school. 2 Wks later I developed a slight rash and pretty severe joint pain so I had a blood test done to confirm and then they had me go in for a test 4 wks later sooooo....... the results just came back and confirmed that I did indeed have fifths disease (also known as parvo virus but not the same thing as what dogs get) at 10 wks pg. I am 16 wks pg so aparently still in the high risk zone at this point. My family practice dr highly recommended that I get an us done to keep an eye on the baby and my midwife agreeed (we are planning a home water birth and typically don't do an us). I scheduled it for fri. and am a bit nervous as I have never had one done at this point in my pg and never for this reason so I don't know what to expect. I also know that several us are recommended and am just not sure how many are truely necessary.
So if you have experience with this or know someone that has please share with me to help me be more prepared for fri. and to ease my discomfort a bit.
Here is one of the many websites I found on the subject. They all vary a bit but are similar as well.

ANYONE??????
My u/s is tomorrow and I just feel so alone in this. I was hoping to find moms w/ experience that weren't all about doing every bit of testing intervention recommended.

My youngest caught Fifths in the last part of my first trimester. To the best of anyone's knowledge, I've never had it, and my titres backed that up. I did have an u/s and everything has checked out okay.

The u/s was a breeze. They do ask you have a full bladder which wasn't so great, but it only takes a cup or two for me and I never drank the whole amount. I had 3 or 4 more as well. As I progressively got bigger, I drank less. I'm not really of the camp that u/s are harmful, so it wasn't a big deal for me and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I guess in a few weeks, we'll ultimately see how the baby is, but every check up and visit has been fine since and baby is huge and kicking away, so I'm not very worried.

joyster- so you didn't get 5ths but were exposed so they are monitoring?
I talked to my dr this am and he thinks depending on how this us looks we might need only one more as it took so long for all of the tests, etc and now I am 8 wks from exposure and 6 wks from actually having it.

Glad your baby is doing well. I will update after the u/s tomorrow.

Sorry for not responding sooner and not being clear. My titres had shown that I had never had it previously, afterward, my titres had shown exposure-though I didn't have any symptoms. After the different u/s (I had to have a couple of extra ones because of baby's position and them not getting clear pics) they haven't detected any anomalies.

I'm hoping your u/s goes well this afternoon, it would be nice for you to have that stress off your mind.

thanks for your responses. I am having just as much anxiety about the u/s as I am about the fifths disease. We are very conservative of the use of u/s so haven't used them often. I believe this is a time where the bennefits outweigh any possible risks. I just don't know what to expect with the appt. etc. so that gives me some anxiety. Just 1 1/2 hrs to go.

Had my u/s this afternoon. The baby died a couple of weeks ago. They think it was probably from the fifths disease although there was no way to tell for sure. I am 16wks 3 days today and looks like the baby was 13wks 3 days. At this point my dr sais it is not very likely that I will go into labor on my own any time soon and the risk of infection is high if I wait too long but he has agreed to prescribe mixal proxal (sp?) and my hbmw has agreed to come to the house on mon. and administer it and stay with me so that I can have a home birth. They were unabale to tell the sex of the baby and I would like to keep it intact so that I can try and see.
The catholic cemetary by us buries babies for free so I think we will do that. My oldest son (8) is devistated and we haven't told the little ones yet. They will be home in about 20 min.
Please keep us in your prayers this really really sucks!!!!!!!!!

I'm so incredibly sorry Mama
I think that's a beautiful idea to do a burial at the cemetary by your house.

I pray for healing for you and your family.

I'm so sorry for your loss. What awful news.

Just a word of caution -- please look up information on misoprostol (aka cytotec) to see whether it is really the best option for you. I was prescribed it for a missed miscarriage (only around 8 weeks, baby measuring 6.5). I had a pretty awful experience with it -- I bled for 60+ days, sometimes with huge clots, one so large/painful that it sent me to the emergency room. The off-label use of this drug is somewhat contraversial -- the manufacturer bans its use to induce labor, but docs do it all the time anyway.

Please, take care of yourself. You will need lots of time to grieve. I hope you are surrounded by caring people.

Oh Mama, I'm so sorry.

I'm sure you know this already, but please be careful about what you say regarding how/why the baby died. I would just leave it at we don't know, these things happen or something like that. I'd hate for your son to somehow think that he's responsible, KWIM? (I'd also caution relatives, KWIM?) I'd hate for him to overhear anything that might make him link it to his illness.

You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.
