We have a 5-year-old son named Rowan. We are debating between Miles, Silas and Declan for baby boy #2, due on Tuesday.

Thoughts? Reactions? Preferences?

We like that Rowan and Silas both have tree/nature meanings. Miles seems like the "safe" choice. And we like that Declan has a similar Irish feel as Rowan.

Why is naming a baby so hard?!

Thanks for any feedback!

I like Miles best. Then Declan. Then Silas. No particular reason, just personal preference.

My vote is for Silas; that was on our short list for a boy.

Miles Declan has a nice ring to it in my mind, although of those three names, Declan is my favorite for a first name (and I do think it sounds nice with Rowan).

I'm not a big fan of Silas, but that might be because I just finished watching the entire series of Heroes on Netflix and it reminds me of Sylar.

Good luck - maybe when you see him it will all click.

That's what I was thinking. We had a couple names picked out for our baby but couldn't name him until we met him face-to-face. Then it was easy!

Miles and Silas are both likely to be pronounced correctly. I like the look of Declan, but I'm not sure how to pronounce it.

I'm sensitive to pronunciation problems because my son, Eli, is often called on as Ellie at the doctor's office. It drives me crazy! I thought we picked the easiest name ever, but no such luck.

I think Declan falls right in line with your first son's name, Rowan. Both are strong Irish names. Declan, to me, just seems like he'd be brother to a Rowan.

That said...Silas was on our short list for a favorite name for a boy.

Not that much a fan of Miles.

Silas. Or Miles.

I can never hear Declan or see without thinking "The Klan". 'Cause I'm from the old south.

I vote Declan, but when I saw it I thought it would be "Deck-lin" I also caught the heroes reference to sylar. Yeah, I like Declan.

Married to my loving DH superhero.gif, becoming more and more "crunchy" with age.

I like Declan because it would make a nice, subtly Irish-themed match for Rowan, and the ending -n ties them together. On the other hand, Silas matches well because they have the same number of letters and syllables, and it matches the soft but masculine sound of Rowan (while Declan is a little "harder" sounding than Rowan because of the D and C). Silas and Rowan would also be a good match for brothers because both are pretty distinctive. Miles is fine but I wouldn't pair them for some reason, I picture a Miles and a Rowan as looking very different and so can't really see them as brothers. Miles would be a great middle name for Declan though.

So, I would probably plan to use Silas. All three are great though, so I'd keep Declan and Miles in mind just in case he doesn't look like a Silas.

Me , DH , Emmy (5/08), and new baby Tilda (1/10)
