We are expecting our fifth girl in a few weeks.  DH and I have three names narrowed down.  DH loves one, I am just OK with them but they all have their problems-- he does not love the one I have the least amount of problems with (confused?), so I am thinking we need to go back to square 1.

I am looking for a name that . . .

  • could be used for a fairy, doctor, and judge (has to fit with all)
  • does not start with F, C, M, or N (these are the initial letters of our other girls)
  • is not on the common side (though I am getting less picky about that, but can't be in the top 200)
  • is easy to say and not too many syllables

THANK YOU!

:-)

Lydia, Olivia, Olive, Rose, Rosa, Rhiannon, Sylvia, Vivienne, Victoria, Gwendolyn, Guinevere, or Wanda?

Most of those have more than one syllable, but the fairy/judge thing got me, and I didn't know how many was too many.

Lydia or Sylvia are my top favorites of that list.

I'm also very partial to the 70's names that haven't come back around yet. Linda, Brenda, Susan, Lisa

Louisa, Virginia, Scarlett, Violet, Alora?

I also like Vivienne (Vivian?), Gwendolyn, and Guinevere, as the previous poster suggested.

So many great ones are . . .guess that's why they are there!

Guinevere is a name DH and I considered . . .still sort of in the running for me.  Not sure what nickname we can use other than Gwen?  Would Wyn be too far off for a nickname?  I like that more. :)

Does not go with the middle name I am set on (using the name of a family friend who passed away as a child) but I guess it does not really matter!

I wish I liked Sylvia.  It is perfect (easy to say, spell, etc.) in just about every way except it reminds me of a girl in school who smelled!  Can someone take that out of my head??

Gwyn is a good nickname for Guinevere.

Wyn could possibly be a nickname for Guinevere.  On "The Wonder Years," Winnie Cooper's full first name was Gwendolen, a similar name, so there is precedent for dropping the "G."  (I mean, I assume that the reason this character had this nickname is that others in real life have done the same thing.)

Positive connotations for Sylvia...a woodland paradise, the talented writer Sylvia Plath, the y, l, and v pushed so charmingly together in the middle...?  I know what you mean about otherwise good names being ruined by people we may barely know.  I have eliminated the name of one of my favorite political philosophers because it happens to be the same as the name of someone I never even met, but heard gross stories about from my sister.  Well, part of it is that I'm sure she'd make fun of me forever if I chose it.  I haven't known any Sylvias I didn't like.  I only met one once, and she was a friendly, successful professor who is a friend of a friend.  She is nice looking and nice smelling.

Crashing, what about Lara?  You can pronounce it like Sarah, or with a long "a" as in Lahra

My eldest is Lara and she gets soooo many compliments on her name

I don't think Wyn is a stretch for Guinevere at all. In the same style, I know a little Genevieve who goes by Vivi.

The other day I heard a woman introduce her new baby girl as "Odessa." The other person loved it and it did have a nice ring to it.  My top girl picks are Stella and Fiona.

Good luck! In my family, I was the 4'th girl and my Aunt had to name me!

I always wondered what her 1st name was-- thought it was Winnifred!  And thanks for the thoughts about the nice-smelling Sylvia!

Oh, I do like that!

Fiona is taken by my 1st.  I have loved that name since I was 11-- I named my harp Fiona and knew I'd always want to use it for a possible daughter.  Dumb Shrek came out when I was PG with her, but I said too bad and named her that anyway.

Cute about your aunt!

That is a cute nn!  Genevieve is another of my favorites but one of my DDs is Niamh (pronounced NEEVE) so it's too close.

I'm loving these suggestions, Beatrix and Ramona especially.  I wish I had to think of ten girls names and no boys.  Not that I don't want a boy - I do, actually - but their names aren't as nice as these!

Another idea:  Paloma.  (I had more until I remembered the letter restrictions.)

I love this name.  DH does not, but I got to pick for #4, so this was her name for a few hours . . .until I heard my friend say it the way an English-speaker would.  Then I just could not go through with it.  I adore, adore, adore it in Spanish but it sounds so butchered in English.

Anyway . . .we are definitely on the same wave-length!

Penelope is a close second as my favorite girl's name, and it meets most of your qualifications, other than being a bit long.  It is definitely easy to say and spell.  (Because our surname is hyphenated and, thus, long, we are not using Penelope;  we are using my other favorite, Matilda, which, unfortunately, begins with "M.")

Either we all have similar taste and are picky together, or DH is the picky one. thumb.gif  I have suggested these to DH and keep getting vetoes.

FlyGirl, Linnea is a top choice for me.  DH used to be OK with it (we were going to use it for #3) but now he says no.  Sigh.  No ideas from him, however!

Thank you, everyone!
