I am 13 weeks pregnant, and I have the worst sinus infection of my life.  Before I started the antibiotic, it felt like I was punched in the face while having 3 root canals.

I have a really difficult trade-off to make.  The pain is more than tylenol can handle at normal doses, so my doctor has recommended decongestants before we try heavier painkillers.  She says sudafed and Chlorpheniramine should be next to try.  I have taken two doses of sudafed over two days (we already had some on hand), and it really does work wonders.  However, it is a class C drug (http://safefetus.com/DrugDetail.asp?DrugId=275&TradeName=Sudafed%20Decongestant&TradeId=4650), but it is on many doctors' lists of 'safe during pregnancy drugs' which really surprised me.  The other choice is class B (http://safefetus.com/DrugDetail.asp?DrugId=379&TradeName=Chlorpheniramine&TradeId=2863) but I've never taken it, so I don't know how well it might work for me.

I do trust my doctor that these risks are still better than the risks of vicodin, and my husband has already taken too much time off work to watch the kids to let me 'wait it out' any longer.  However, I'm not sure if I would be better off trying the one I've never tried, or if I should stick with a low dose of sudafed, since it works so well for me.  Do you have any thoughts I could consider?

I've had a sinus infection too this pregnancy, and my acupuncturist recommended Guaifenesin which is an expectorant rather than decongestion, but it might be worth trying. I got conflicting information about taking it during pregnancy from the internet, but she and my midwife and the pharmacist said it was fine. I haven't actually tried it as the acupuncture did a good job of clearing up my sinuses (it was that or time, anyway - but I'd recommend giving acupuncture a shot if you are into that) but it is over the counter so might be worth a try.

I know what a nightmare these sinus things can be - I've had at least mild sinusitis with all my pregnancies. I hope the antibiotics kick in fast for you!
