I wanted sushi really badly and we went to get it and I decided against it at the last second. My husband ate it and got horrible awful projectile food poisoning. It kind of turned me off sushi for the rest of the pregnancy!

I do. I would definitely eat it more often if my fil had a restaurant. Most of the safety concerns come from how it's stored and handled and if you know he's safe, you're good.

I do. I had my 2nd daughter while living in Japan. A whole nation of women doesn't stop eating it through pregnancy. Why should I? smile.gif

I read that in Japan pregnant women Re actually encouraged to eat sushi often. I think that sushi in Japan would be way more safe than sushi in the US only because i read that Japan's health ministry is very strict.

I really craved sushi during my last pregnancy, and I would love some now as well! I heard that as long as the fish was frozen beforehand, then it's safe. To be honest I ate it anyway last time, and will probably do the same again this time.

I'm going to a conference in a couple of weeks and there's a group of us who tries to find sushi wherever our conference is at, so I will probably partake.  I'm REALLY looking forward to it.  I just won't have any sake, that's all.  Sheepish.gif

Me.  I just don't eat as much of the mercury-offenders, but otherwise, like the OP said, a whole nation doesn't stop eating it, so I don't worry about it.  Heck, during the first trimester, it's one of the few things I can get to stay down.

Noticed this in new posts.

Just stick with the vegetarian options if you are really concerned. It's no different than eating any other rice and veggie dish.

If you want some protein, look for sushi using cooked seafood, such as smoked salmon or poached shellfish, rather than raw.

It's also very easy to make at home.

I'm not wild about raw stuff, but LOVE shrimp, crab, or cooked fish sushi. Especially when pregnant.

Even mercury offenders like ahi, opah, et cetera have been found to be safe in greater quantities than thought previously because of the binding effect of the selenium also present in the fish. Tilefish and shark, not sushi components, are really still the only ones that should be avoided.

I did, but only cooked and/or veggie ones.  Even restricting it to those the many options kept me full and happy.

The problem I had was that specifically craved raw salmon sushi. But I always asked if it had been frozen beforehand, just to be on the safe side.

With my DD I craved salmon-topped california rolls like mad, and indulged frequently. I also sometimes had spicy tuna and yellowtail, but mostly stuck to salmon.

I've had the salmon-topped california rolls a few times this pregnancy, but am not craving it as badly as with DD. I might go get myself some tomorrow, though. YUM.

I do. As long as it's not gas station sushi I think you're pretty safe. I go to the same place all the time and it's got a good reputation. No one getting sick and stuff :)

Me me me, I do! Honestly I don't worry about the sushi at all (I do go to a high quality place for it, though!), I'm just careful not to eat too much of the pickled ginger, LOL. I'm a huge fan of ginger...I could probably eat a whole jar of the pickled stuff on its own!

I make my own at home using veggies, cream cheese, and avocado.  Having read too much about mercury and pcbs in fish I just avoid the raw fish kind since I don't know the source of the fish.  I do however eat grilled wild caught alaskan salmon, and I could use it in the sushi if I wanted I just usually make my own without it.

I do as well.  I stick to places that I know have a good reputation and higher quality fish.

The issue isn't cooked/uncooked.  It is with cross-contamination.  So you could get sick from vegitarian rolls or from tempura shrimp rolls, for example, if it were cross-contaminated with something else.  Same reason you can get sick from eating any type of food anywhere though...

The part about freezing is important because flash freezing is what kills the potential parasites you could consume in the raw fish.  I know at least in Canada it is a requirement, but don't know about elsewhere.

And, as with others I just avoid the mercury offenders and enjoy (thoroughly!!).

You can totally eat sushi while pregnant, just be super careful and only eat the cooked items. We've even gone out and asked the itamae if he would plesae use a just cleaned knife when making sushi to avoid cross contamination. While I usually just make it at home with items i buy at http://www.sushinut.com you can still go out. But if you buy your own fish and make it yourself then you *know* that it's going to be safe, and you can get your fix. 2 kids already and no problems with my huge sushi toot (if that's even an expression) :)
