I haven't seen a recent plus size pregnancy thread so I thought I would start a new one. I'd like this to be a support thread where we can come and talk about our experiences. Hoping others will join in!

Great idea, Dalia! I'm in!
There's also a plus size mamas group but it's not very active at the moment.
A little about me:
I'm 28 weeks weeks with baby number 2. I have a 25 month old little chatterbox and am a wee bit worried about adjusting to being a mom of 2. I had hoped to nurse through pregnancy but around week 24 DD sort of lost her latch. Now she pretends to nurse to fall asleep most of the time and I'm really hoping that once my milk comes in, she'll nurse again. The pregnancy has been pretty uneventful but more intense than my first. I'm measuring waaaay ahead but an US check showed everything to be just fine. I'm starting to look forward to the end here although I probably have a good 12 weeks left.
How has your pregnancy been going?

Thanks, skycheattraffic! Sounds like things are going well for you. As for me, I'm doing well. I have early onset Gestational Diabetes and that's making the OB want to check everything under the sun and call me "high risk", which really chaps my hide. I HATE that term. Really, can their be a worse term to say to pregnant women? Ugh!

I started this thread because I stupidly read somewhere that being overweight carries as many risks as smoking and drinking. Really??? I thought that was so absurd. I know I am much healthier than some skinny people I know! Anyway, hopefully we can share our stories and encourage each other here. :-)

I am a plus size momma to be pregnant for the first time and expecting twins!  I just read yesterday that for twin pregnancies being overweight can actually be a good thing which made me feel better, but I am worried about the whole gestational diabetes thing.  I have never smoked, drinking alcohol to me is a no go too, and I am an ovo-lacto-vegetarian - I just love carbohydrates! My pre-pregnancy weight was 250 pounds and I wear size 22 to 24 pants.  As I look at maternity clothes, I am annoyed.  Where do big mamas go to get something that doesn't look like a tent or muumuu?  My pants still fit but are definitely starting to get tighter. Also with twins I know that even regular maternity clothes will likely not cut it after 20 weeks any way.

I wonder if Motherhood Maternity had a plus size section? I think it does. I'm gonna check now! Congratulations on your twins. I admit, I am jealous. You got the two for one special!!! ;-)

Dalia, I know what you mean about the term "high risk". My MW was throwing it around in early pregnancy and it always ruffled my feathers. I wish they'd just say "needing more specialized care/additional monitoring" or something. I'm sorry you must deal with GD and that there's so much more scrutiny. I'm all for getting the care you need but sometimes care providers get too caught up and forget that stressing out or worrying the patient can have its own risks. I hope all your testing comes back normal and that whatever treatment you're on for the diabetes continues to work and lets you manage the condition well. I'm going in for my second GTT tomorrow and hope to be in the clear. I think people forget that while our size elevates our risk of certain complications, it certainly doesn't guarantee we'll have these problems. The two moms I know who had complications (one had preeclampsia and IUGR, the other had borderline preeclampsia and a large baby who couldnt fit through her pelvis) are both thin and seemingly healthy. Meanwhile I'm a size 24 and had a healthy baby who was under 8 lbs and a very straight forward birth (induced at 41 weeks with the gel). It goes to show that you can't predict an outcome simply looking at mom and I wish caregivers didnt automatically think "complications" and "high risk" just looking at me.

Congratulations on expecting twins, lilacvioletiris! Hopefully you won't have to deal with GD and go on to have a healthy, straight forward twin pregnancy and birth. For maternity clothes, I honestly just go with regular clothes that are flexible enough to accommodate the belly. I also had good luck with belly bands: basically a tube of fabric you wear over your belly and it keeps your unbuttoned pants up. It just looks like you're wearing a cami under your shirt smile.gif. For tops, I can get away with the very longest styles of old navy tanks and tshirts (I layer a tank under a shirt) in xxl. I don't know if my ideas would work for a twin belly but sometimes we carry differently than we expect and it's worth a thought. I'm actually kind of surprised that I'm not having twins since they run on both sides of my family but I'm also a bit relieved: pregnancy with a 2 year old is challenging enough as it is wink1.gif

Hi, all!  I'm also plus sized and pregnant - I'm 30 years old and 17 weeks along with my first child, and I'm a size 16.  I've been incredibly lucky to have a midwife who has been extremely supportive and kind regarding my weight - she only ever refers to it if I bring it up except for the first appointment when we discussed the ideal weight gain range (mine is 11-20 pounds).  I do have high-ish blood pressure - it's borderline, but it has been that way all my life, long before I was overweight, due to a childhood illness.

The specialist I see regarding my BP, on the other hand, is horrible.  He quite obviously has no idea how to talk to patients, overweight or not, and I'm dreading having to see him again in June.  Still, I'm glad I just have to see him rather than switch entirely away from my midwife practice - because the midwives at my clinic deliver at the local hospital birthing center, they can keep the majority of their patients who might otherwise have to leave for being 'high risk'.  The sheer fact that I'm on BP meds (at a very low dose) would typically disqualify me and send me to an OB.

I haven't had to buy maternity clothing yet, owing to the fact that I wear my jeans very, very low in the front naturally to accommodate my little bit of regular pudge.  (My weight is all in my butt. :P)  I do have a belly band though which I like, and I've had to stick to wearing only my longer shirts.  I wear camisoles from Costco underneath my T-shirts - that way, I get to skip the bra (so nice with the sore boobs) and they're nice and long, so I don't have to worry about belly sticking out.  :)

Nice to meet you ladies!

Welcome rainydaycraft!  Glad you have a health care provider that doesn't make a huge deal about your weight. I hope the OB I find does the same.  I just keep the thought in my head "My great grandmother weighed as much as me or me and she had 7 perfectly normal babies.  I can to!"  I look like like the lady. It is so uncanny. Even the way we do our hair.  I never met her, as she died when my mom was a child, but when I look at pictures of her when she was pregnant and otherwise, I can see me.

AFM, I graduated from the reproductive endocrinologist yesterday.  I saw my babies little legs and arms and their heads.  Wow.  Two babies growing big and strong.  I am so amazed I get to be their mom.  It was so emotional when I heard their heart beats on the ultrasound machines.  Those little ones are alive! I can't believe I will be 8 weeks pregnant tomorrow!

Welcome rainydaycraft! I'm hoping you're over the worst of the first trimester blahs. The second trimester tends to be good to me and I hope you have a similar experience. I hope your BP settles for this pregnancy and you go on to have an uncomplicated pregnancy and birth. My BP is normally pretty good and pregnancy tends to make it drop. With my first pregnancy it got as low as 80/40 and I was dizzy a lot of the time. This time I average 120/70 and I'm a lot steadier on my feet. Your midwife sounds lovely. Mine is insisting on the bariatric protocol (2GTT, monthly US in 3rd trimester) which I'm grudgingly complying with because I'm hoping once the birth comes she will be reassured enough to go with the flow. For all the hoops I'm jumping through, this woman better put on a catcher's mitt and let me push standing on my head if I see fit! Lol

Lilacvioletiris, I look a lot like my 2 grandmas too but I'm taller and heavier than both of them. I'm also about to be more experienced since they both had one birth each (without major problems as far as I'm aware). My mom is an only child and my dad was a twin. The ladies on my side of the family tend to live into their 80's with a few of them passing away in their mid 70's so I feel pretty confident that I'm meant to be on the larger side but with a decent life expectancy.
It's great that you're done with the specialist and I'm glad you got to hear those little heartbeats. It's something magical, actually seeing and hearing our babies before they are big enough to be felt. I remember our dating US with DD. It was the day after my niece was born, in the same hospital. We saw our tiny baby, then hopped onto the elevator and met our newborn niece.... Emotional to say the least! The girls are 7 months apart and now at 2 and 2.5 are thick as thieves wink1.gif

I thought it may be fun to have a question of the week to keep us talking. Here's one:
QOTW: How many children would you like to have?
For me, I'd like two. It's how both DH and I grew up and it's a nice compromise: not having an only child but also not being overtaxed by a large brood. We got pregnant (too) easily both times so from here on out it will be all about prevention.

Ah, the how many kids question. DH has one sibling and can only see having two kids. I have 6siblings and would like to have 2 or 3. Then there is getting pregnant - DH has extremely low sperm count so getting pregnant will require medical intervention. We have 11 embryos frozen but I know we will end up donating many of them to another couple who needs them.

Thank you for the welcome!  Yes, it's so interesting how my hypertension specialist just automatically assumes that my weight is the only factor in my blood pressure.  I'm sitting there going, well, I haven't been overweight all my life... and I know plenty of bigger women who have no problems.  Sigh.  As you said, at least my midwife is great.  :)  I feel very lucky in that regard.

My husband has been driving me a little crazy with his position on number of children - he keeps saying that he's "fine" with two, but he would prefer only one.  I'm not sure how to take that... will it end up being an issue when we do try for #2, if we do?  I'm not sure.  Since I'm already 30 and pregnant with the first, I feel like I may not even get an opportunity for another, which is fine.  But I kinda always planned to at least TRY for another.  I have one brother, and he's much younger - I was 12 when he was born.  So I know what it was like to be an only child, and it wasn't all that much fun.  I can't imagine not having my brother around.

He may change his tune after the first is a bit older... we'll see.  Still, I'm happy just to get to be a mommy to one, no matter what.  :)

Hi, Ladies. I'm a plus size mom too, could stand to lose about 50 or 60lbs. This is my fourth baby but the first that I've started out overweight. It does concern me some because of the higher chance for complications, but I'm happy that I haven't gained anything yet. I'm 16 weeks now and hoping to gain only 10-15lbs. We'll see!

How many kids do I want? Well, three seemed like a good number, but God had other plans so four it is. :-)

rainydaycraft, I hope your husband comes around to the let's have 2 when the time is right. I hope you can enjoy this pregnancy with all its wonder now!  I am 36, going to be 37 in a few weeks, and I am just ecstatic that finally I get to have babies.  It might be my only pregnancy if I am pregnant with a boy and a girl and I want to enjoy it too.

FencedinFamily, welcome to to the group. Four babies sounds like a great number!

AFM, last night I went to my first prenatal swim class at the YMCA.  It was a blast.  There were 5 other ladies there at varying stages of pregnancy. I was the one with the furthest out due date.  It felt so good to be weightless in the pool.  Going in they had a handicap accessible stair case, but the teacher had the lifeguard take it out so we had more room for all the ladies, so I had to climb up the ladder at the side of the pool.  I barely made it out.  Next time I will ask for the stairs to be put back in.  I will definitely go again.

We have water aerobics here as well. It's really nice but they keep the water a little colder than I like and last time I had a hard time warming up afterwards. I was cold all day!

I keep meaning to do the waterfit type class but simply dont get around to it. Today my left hip/small of my back really started to hurt, I guess it's probably the dreaded sciatica. I escaped without it in my first pregnancy but not this time I guess. 29 weeks today and feeling 38 lol

There is a regular water aerobics class before the prenatal swim class. The class is in the therapy pool which is warmer, almost too warm but nice.

Last night we were in the regular swimming pool, not the therapy one and man was it cold. Tuesday night a woman came and gave her birth story. It was encouraging because she was way heavier than me and had a natural birth. She attributed that to her doula who empowered her to do her birth her way, not just follow nurse's orders.

I think I might have a UTI. At the doctor to make sure if it is or not.

Doctor doesn't think it is UTI so I am thankful for that.

I hope you're in the clear, UTIs suck! I'm 30 weeks today and entering the tiny bladder days so I'm a bit more worried I may end up with one soon.

I had a great week but this morning my moods/emotions were just overwhelming. I had hoped my mom could come over but that fell through. I was blubbering and crying over every little thing and simply couldn't take my 2 year old's attitude. She wasn't bad or anything, just general 2 year old exuberance and stuff; I simply could not handle it. It's a beautiful day out but I put on a couple of sesame streets and curled up in the other room, sobbing. I hope she goes down for a long nap or I'm sunk. I'm counting the hours until DH gets home. I feel terrible and useless but today it's either some TV or me crying/yelling at her. The venting helps; I'm going to try taking her outside after her nap.

ETA: I'm glad to see its not a UTI smile.gif

I was so scared last night that I had a urinary track infection. Went to my gp dr and the urine test was negative so thankfully whatever pelvic pain I am having isn't a uti. I have never had one but it seems I drink tons of water and hardly tinkle much. I have the urge to go just there isn't much there. Anybody else have pain on both sides of the abdomen and weird, I guess I will call it tingles in the bladder area?

LVI, I have weird tinges throughout the pelvic area but they feel more ligamenty than anything else. I started taking a calcium/magnesium supplement on top of my prenatal multivitamin and probiotic and that's helped with the muscle aches/cramps. Basically anything that's not a contraction I tend to ignore unless its a sharp, intense pain. I think all I've had were stretching type discomfort in the pelvis/lower abdomen. I think if you're UTI free then it's likely standard pregnancy stuff. Maybe you're retaining water and that's why you seem to pee less. Are you swollen at all?

How's everyone else doing? Let's check in!

I have noticed that I am a bit puffy. I did superhydration over the weekend and got lots of extra sleep which helped. I think it must have been growing pains.

I am having some crampy achy pains today. I was walking around a lot today and hadn't rested as much as I know I should.

went shopping for a new dress for the multiple graduation events happening at my school. I am unimpressed with the local maternity selection. jCpenney-nothing in store, Macy's nothing in store but did find a Jessica Howard branded dress that I really like made of stretchy material, target oh my ugly max size barely fitting, Kohls just had pants and tops and a couple dresses in size small. I am definitely need to make some purchases outside my local area. Lots of people get pregnant. What do they wear?

I dunno!! I have had the same problem. But I lucked out recently and found some non-maternity stuff at a local boutique that looked really cute. But yeah, our maternity sections here in my small town is LAME. Wish I was back in L.A. sometimes.

There is a plus size consignment shop about 30 minutes from here. I guess I need to make a run there and see what I can find.  I might have to do some DIY changes to some otherwise fitting pants to make them maternity.  I can't fathom spending 58 dollars on a pair of pants (that was the price at Kohls). I just shake my head in disgust.  Come on let us pregnant ladies look nice and not have pants that fit terrible.

I completely gave up clothing - no, I'm not streaking around town lol. I live in sweats and a stretchy skirt and am lucky to have two pairs of capris which fit if I move the waist below my belly... Not a flattering look but they stay up and I'm not flashing young children at the park. This is the beauty of being a SAHM; no dress code wink1.gif
On the flip side, I've been up since 5 am. WTH?! I'll sooooo regret this in about 5 or 6 hours :/
