Babykicks is a family owned company from Maryland, that makes fabulous cloth diapering products and accessories. They are truly dedicated to the cause, using sustainable materials like hemp and organic cotton. I can personally say that my Babykicks doublers were one of my first diapering purchases, and after three years they not only still absorb like crazy, but thanks to the durability of hemp, they are perfectly intact and ready to use on a second child.

Babykicks makes a variety of cloth diapering products and accessories, and they are giving you a chance to win some! For details, see the end of the post, but here's a hint - to enter, you may want to pay attention to the paragraphs below.

What makes the materials Babykicks uses so great? For those of you who don't know, hemp is a pretty incredible fiber. It is 4x more absorbent, and 3x stronger than cotton. Babykicks uses a blend of hemp and organic cotton, so you get the durability and superior absorbency of hemp, combined with the plush softness of organic cotton. Why organic cotton? In the US, (non-organic) cotton occupies 1% of US farmland, but is sprayed with 50% of all pesticides used in the US. This heavy use of chemicals is responsible for groundwater contamination.

In stark contrast to traditional cotton, hemp has an extremely low impact on the environment. It requires zero chemicals to help it grow - no herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers. How is this possible? It grows rapidly, so if the fields are densely seeded, young plants will develop quickly and shade out competing weeds, making herbicides unnecessary. Hemp's roots can grow up to 6 feet into the soil, which helps to break it up and aerate it. Once harvested, the remains can be mulched back into the soil to boost nitrogen content and other nutrients, eliminating the need for fertilizers. Furthermore, hemp is exceptionally resistant to pests, deeming the use of pesticides and fungicides unnecessary for production.

In addition to needing no chemicals to grow it, hemp also helps alleviate deforestation problems and grows much more quickly than trees. It can be transformed into numerous materials, including paper, plastic composites and building materials. Henry Ford constructed the infamous hemp car made of resin stiffened with hemp fibers which was extremely tough and resistant to dents. Even the oil from the seeds is extremely healthy to consume.

So were you paying attention to all of those hemp facts? For those that are interested in trying out this amazing fiber, Babykicks is giving away three fantastic prizes! One lucky winner will receive a pocket diaper and a pair of their NEW hemp baby shoes, another will receive a set of washies and a set of nursing pads, and the third winner will get a $15 gift certificate to Babykicks!
