Just curious about how common this is and if it is something that usually shows symptoms.

yes, it usually shows signs as the cervix opens a bit and starts to thin out in late pregnancy.

true placenta previa (where it covers the cervix) is not common. low-lying placentas, however, are more common, especially in early pregnancy. As the uterus grows, so does the position of the placenta.

Do you think that this something one needs to rule out (vis US or whatever) prior to attempting a homebirth (assuming normal low risk pg and no symptoms)?

no true placenta previa that would be incompatible with homebirth will show itself before labor- usually bleeding and not just a streak or 2. if you get to 36-37 weeks without any problems the placenta most likely is not covering the os.
