Hi! I'm just curious. DS took 19 hours to birth from beginning to end. I'm curious how long this one will probably take. Please share your birthing time times! Thanks!

#1 - 12 hours
#2 - 22 hours
#3 - 6 hours
#4 - 45 minutes

My second labor was under unusual circumstances, pre-term labor, incompetent cervix, bedrest, then pitocin & bad caregiver so I listed my last two to give some perspective.

I've only had one -but- my doula told me rule of thumb is 2nd labor is about half the time as first (but there are always rule breakers, it CAN go longer etc.)

1st ds -- 15+ hrs, 1 wk late, 9lbs 2oz

2nd ds -- 4hrs, 2 wks early, 7lbs 1oz

Honestly, I'm a little scared for a 3rd labor, if they continue to get shorter. The second was almost too sudden for me, I spent half the time wondering if it was the real thing.

My mom went 16 hours with me, 7 with my younger brother.

Something I have heard midwives say in the past is that "first labors are long, second labors are short, third labors are unpredictable."

My first (pit induced in hospital) was 36 hours of pure hell.

My second (at home) was less than 3, and it was hard but nothing compared to my first.

I sure hope my second is much, much shorter than my first -- 36 hours.

Interesting thread -- thanks for all the replies!

Oh g-d, then I am in trouble. My first was 80 hours. 4 stinkin' days, with interventions starting about halfway through.

I am so hoping to have it take more like a quarter of the time of the first. I would be happy with that.

1st- mild contractions for about 7-8 hours and then hard labor for about 9 hours, about 45 min. of pushing. My dd weighed 9lbs 5oz.

2nd- mild contactions for about 6-7 hours and then 2 hours of moderate labor, 1 hour of hard labor, and I pushed for about, oh, 7 mins. I think? She was much smaller 7 lbs. 6 oz.

I might be preggers again.......so I guess we'll see again.

Encouraging thread! My first was 37.5 hours, HARD labor. Pushing was pretty much okay at 45 minutes. Now I've been contracting for four months, but I'm hoping it will mean a much shorter labor. Today would be good.

1st labor...8 hours from time water broke, but 6 hours of contractions and back labor including 2 hours of pushing. It wasn't too bad considering DS was posterior right until he came out. Natural birth at birthing center.

2nd labor...1 hour 45 minutes including maybe 10 or 15 minutes of occassional pushing (because really my body was pushing all by itself, barely any voluntary pushes from my). For the last month of the pregnancy I did a lot of things to keep baby anterior..hardly ever reclined, sat on exercise ball, did yoga, etc. Also I stayed in a hands and knees or childs pose for a good portion of my labor. This was at home mostly UC by myself...DH got there 20 minutes before DD was born and caught her, the midwife came 20 minutes after she was born.

First: Natural, 44 hours hard labour including 2 hrs pushing. Had 3 days straight of early labour prior to that, and off and on two weeks prior to that.

Second: ??? I'm : for a shorter labour. Hell, even 24 hours is short compared to 44!

My mom was in labour not even two hours with my brother, and felt no pain.
She got crampy, went to the hospital, sat down and read a magazine and then the nurse came in to check her before the doctor went on his lunch break and when she lifted up the sheet she said, "The head is crowning!". She thinks that was about a half hour after she got there.

With me it was 23 hours and horrible. Hospital, lots of interventions, LOTS of stress, lots of health problems.

ETA: Forgot to add, I was the second baby.

Man, thanks for this post. It totally gives me hope, as I had a 44 hour 1st labor too! :LOL I think now that my body has plenty of practice, this labor will be short and easy.
