We're debating between Ethan and Ian.

Yes, we know Ethan is popular, but that isn't a concern for us (we have a 6.5 year old Emily and her name has been #1 on the SSA list since 1998...and we *just* ran into 2 other Emily's for the first time since she was born ~ they're 14 and 10 and attend taekwondo class with my oldest son. We've lived in Oregon, Florida & Georgia since our Emily was born and for a name that is supposedly super-popular, we haven't found ourselves running into lots of little Emily's, so we no longer worry too much about how "popular" a name is).

Anyhow.......

My other kids are Megan, Adam, Emily, David, Sarah & Isaac. Which name do you think would be a better "fit" with my 6, Ian or Ethan?

Thanks for helping me out!

I think either one would "fit" nicely with your other children's names, since they're all short & classic.

How are you pronouncing Ian? I've heard E-an (like Ethan without the th) and I-an.

Regardless of Ian's pronunciation, my personal preference is Ethan.

We'd pronounce it "Ee-in"....just like Ethan but without the "th".

Great kids names! I love them both, but usually Ian more then Ethan because it isn't as popular, but that's just me.

Congrats and good luck!

I like both a lot. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Maybe just keep both as options until you see him?

I love both of these names, I think Ethan fits with your other names better, but Ian fits fine too.

I agree with maybe waiting till he's born and just seeing who he is.

Ethan. You have no first-letter repeats yet in your kids' names, and I think Ethan looks great in that list.

Oooh, tough call. My dh's name is Ian and Ethan was on my list of names for our ds (but dh vetoed it). If you don't mind the popularity aspect (which you said you didn't), then I'd go with Ethan. I think Ian is a great name, and you'd think it would be an easy one, but people are constantly mispronouncing it and asking him more than once how to spell it. I don't think you'd have that as much with Ethan. (Although if you look in my sig at my ds's name, you might not take pronunciation advice from me!)

The "repeating a first initial" was a big hang-up for both dh and me for a while, but we've pretty much gotten over it. Really, Ethan & Ian are the *only* names we can agree on as possibilities, so using either of them will duplicate a first letter ('cuz we have Emily and Isaac). Dh told me that since we were breaking our pattern already by having a boy instead of a girl (we've had g/b/g/b/g/b thus far), we might as well go all the way and duplicate an initial, too.

Thanks for your input. I like the way Ethan looks, too. Dh, of course, prefers Ian. But we'd both be happy with either name, so we probably *will* just wait until he's born and see which "fits" better. Still, it's helpful to get other people's opinions and see what they think.

oh, silly me, you do have Emily, but I guess with Isaac and Ian being close in age, it seemed a little more pattern-ish

I vote for Ethan - to me, it fits better with your other children's names. Ian seems a little too, I don't know, not trendy, but something. Just doesn't seem as classic I guess as Ethan and the rest of the names in your family. What are you using for a middle name?

I personally like Ian better - but perhaps it's because that's what we are naming OUR new baby!

I also do really like Ethan...I don't think you can go wrong either way. They are both really great, classic names.

I vote for Ethan. For some reason, Isaac and Ian sound too similar for brothers.

On a side note, I love all of your kids names! I'm a name nerd and they go together perfectly!

Mama of three.
