Hello A friend of my mom's is in need of some info on whether there is a way to thin her cervix naturally. She's due a week or so, her OB wants to induce her (knucklehead), she has had two babies before where they had to give her meds to thin her cervix, and she would like to avoid that this time. Apparently in her past pregnancies, everything has been ready but her cervix, which has caused problems. I thought I would check here Thanks!!

Evening primrose oil, either orally or as a suppository!

Usually no matter what you try, if the cervix isn't favorable and ready anyway, it won't do much. But SEX is a great start! The prostoglandins in semen may help, and EPO (vaginally). Walking is good, too, as if you can get the baby to drop further into the pelvis, the pressure on the cervix can contribute to effacement/dilation.

I was going to post that sex is one of the best ways to thin the cervix as well. The PP is right, it's the prostaglandins in the semen.

I used EPO with dd#2 and it worked within 14 hours from the first dose to beginning of labor. I took it orally and as a vaginal suppository. If she does use it as a suppository, tell her to make sure to wear a panty liner or pad as it's very messy. I just used the gel-caps.

EPO and sex, sex and more sex! I disagree that you have to be ready for it to work-that's true with induction methods, but not necessarily in ripening the cervix. You are correct that it won't send her into labor if sh'es not ready...but doing EPO vaginally with both pregnancies had my cervix thinned and very ready long before I went into labor...two weeks really.
