Has anyone had Medical Assistance help pay for their home birth?

We qualify for Medical Assistance, but I doubt they'll pay much. My midwife has another client that has insurance and MA and she said that MA says they will pay $700 and only $700 for prenatal/labor/delivery, etc. even at a hospital(which with the prices of a hospital birth, I can't imagine how they could only pay $700).

So has anyone had Medical Assistance pay for any of their home birth? Thanks, Sara

I didn't b/c I used a direct entry midwife, but in our state MA will pay for a homebirth with a CNM, but only a CNM. Not sure of the amount though

My heartfelt thanks to all those that have donated milk to others; you are amazing

mamato2boys, thanks for the reply. The midwife I want to go with is a CNM. Do you know how you found out that MA would pay for a homebirth with a CNM? Did you just ask them? I kind of was nervous to ask because I was afraid they might flat out say no instead of giving it a chance.

Thanks, Sara

Sara,

I looked it up online before asking anyone about it. I went to my states Dept of Health website and in the MA section I searched for homebirth info. There it said they covered homebirth with a CNM. I then questioned my caseworker--she said she didn't think I could "do that" as a MA recipiant I told her that homebirth coverage was listed on the web and asked if she could look into it for me--she then confirmed they only pay CNM's.

In Wi. the reasoning for paying CNM's seemed to be that b/c they pay CNM's to assist births at a hospital or birth center, they needed to pay then for homebirth also.

Hope you find some info. and can get MA to cover some of the cost! I really liked the direct entry MW we hired and it was worth it to have to pay out of pocket to get the birth I wanted but it would have been nice not to have had to scrape the $$ together!

My state will provide MA for a homebirth w/ our state licensed midwives, however they only give the mw $700 (wonder if it's everywhere?) and my mw won't accept it because that amount is too low for her to stay in practice. She's been wonderful about working with us on payment plans though, so we've paid out of pocket each time.

Can't your midwife accept the $700 towards her fees and you cover the remaining amount due?

I don't know about everywhere, but in SC this is illegal and can get a mw in big trouble.

Why is it illegal do you know? Is it that they are supposed to accept MA as the full payment and so they wouldn't be?

I think it's illegal for any health care paractioner to take payment from MA and payment from an individual for the same services--nationwide, all practioners
