Just upon seeing it I would probably pronounce it SY-an but I suck at pronouncing things

I thought Sean was "shawn" and have never seen Sian

I suck at pronunciation too, but for what its worth I'd pronounce it like Zion, but maybe with an "S" sound instead of the "Z".

Seems very eastern to me. At first glance it seemed to me that it would be pronounced like "Xian" or, phonetically, like, Zhan.

Never heard of it as a name before, but I liked it instantly.

Sian = "Zhawn", almost like something between Shawn and John, but without the hard J.

Mama to Munchkin  and Chickadee ...and co-parent to 3 additional bundles of energy!

This is funny to me because when I see "Xian" my mind immediately translates it to "Christian" I've been in way too many pagan chat rooms

We met while my dad was over there studying for a summer....

As I was told then, Sian is the female spelling of Sean. She spelt it with a ^ over one of the vowels, too.

Her family pronounced it closer to "Shan" than "Shawn," even accounting for the northern english accent.

If nobody told me how to pronounce it, I would say See-ahn. But I can see how Shawn would make sense too!

Thanks everyone!
When I first saw it I thought Si-Ann, but I am horrible at pronouncing things like that so I knew I was probably off. However, I like Si-Ann better than Shan or Shawn or Sharm, etc.
Maybe I will have to make up my own spelling for Si-Ann, thats if dh likes it, lol. We didnt have problems agreeing on names for our boys but now that we need a name for a girl... its another story.

Sian is welsh gaelic for Jane. It has a circumflex over the a which allows for the "r" sound where there is not one so it is pronounced "Sharn" however it can sound like "Shan" when pronounced with a thick welsh accent. I hope this clears things up. I hated my name as a Canadian kid, always having to explain it in school, correct the pronunciation but it made me very assertive and not afraid to speak in front of people later on in life which served me well in my career so I guess in the long run it worked for me!!!

There's a facebook group for people named Siân and they discuss how they pronounce their name. The traditional (Welsh) pronunciation is similar to Sharn, but many go by Shawn. I grew up with a girl by that name and substitute teachers always read her name as Sy-ann.
