hi, quick question.....is milk thistle safe during pregnancy? I have developed a rash(maybe pupps) and I have read it can be related to liver function. I want to take a supplement i have for liver function that has milk thistle and dandelion root.....the bottle does not have any caution for pregnant women, but I hope someone can tell me if they have used it or know if it is safe??
thanks, christine

I've been taking milk thistle and dandelion and artichoke leaf under guidance from my midwife and the herbalist who works with the practice. It cleared up a horrible case of cystic pregnancy acne for me, and they also successfully used it to treat another client's rash. I Googled my brains out before taking it, and basically what I found was that there are no studies proving it is safe, but none really proving it is unsafe. It made the condition worse for a few days before it made it better, as stuff really does seem to purge through the skin. Good luck!

The only concerns I'd have about taking liver herbs during pregnancy is that you don't want your liver (or any other organs for that matter) dumping toxins into your bloodstream. I'd talk to your midwife or an herbalist before taking it. Other herbs like dandelion, red clover, and burdock are really good for the skin and are safe in pg.

Happily parenting our snuggly wild child since 2007 and her little brother since 2011!

If you google or yahoo search for almost any herb (including RRL)-you will find that most sources will state a disclaimer about it not being proven safe to take during pregnancy.

I have found reliable sources that say Milk thistle is fine to take during pregnancy.
http://www.kroger.com/hn/Herb/Milk_Thistle.htm
http://www.vitacost.com/science/hn/H...lk_Thistle.htm
http://www.liversupport.com/info4.htm

I choose to take it, my midwife says it's fine if I take it and I feel fine about it; but it is a personal decision.
