If any of you have any good natural/homeopathic/herbal remedies for pregnancy-related edema, please help me! I just checked my urine (no protein, no glucose, nothing) and my BP is 106/70. However, I have massive nonpitting edema of both feet and ankles which ends up being whole-leg edema by the end of the day.

Short of sitting around with my feet up for the next several weeks (which is impossible with my boys and my job), what can I do?? This swelling does not even completely "go away" overnight (and I've been sleeping with the foot of the bed up on blocks and my legs on extra pillows/blankets). I am pushing the protein and the water bigtime. I am taking all my supplements, including the multivitamin and the extra calcium/mag as recommended by my midwife.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Go swimming! It works so well, but be prepared to pee like crazy afterwards.

Nettles tea or tincture. It's the only thing that worked for me (my herbalist recommended it.) I ate cucumbers until I was sick of them with little to no improvement.

On the Red RAspberry Leaf tribe, there is a huge post about the benefits of nettles which include (though it in entirety) vit k, iron, help with edema, and reducing bp.

I saw my bp go down in 2 weeks and I have virtually no swelling at all anymore and I would consider it milk to the verge of moderate before I started with nettles.

And, the tea is actually quite tasty!

I second the watermelon... a natural diuretic.

What works for me is a pair of compression stockings (TEDS). I got them years ago by Rx when I started having varicosities even before having kiddos.

I put them on in am before getting out of bed and leave them on. Allbeit, they are hot, but sure help my feet and legs. I don't know how I would stay at work all night at the hospital without them. My dh calls them wonder woman hose, because they are "bullet proof" ha ha ha

I bet you can get them OTC at a place that sells med supplies, or ask your health care provider. Or, if you are a EMT, ask around, someone should be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

My midwife actually encourages me to salt my food! Something about balancing the extra fluid, I don't know? Here's a link.. http://www.storknet.com/experts/nutrition/cd23.htmand

And to drink lots, and lots of water! I've also heard cucumber works! I also had non-pitting edema with no high blood pressure with DD's pregnancy. Nothing helped much, sorry to say!

I've also been told and read that salt intake actually helps with the swelling.

Cranberry juice (plain, not sweetened) added to your water REALLY helps. Ditto lemon juice.

All the protein and water is a good thing - keep it up!

Hope this helps.
