There's a Plus-sized and Pregnant thread in my DDC, but I'm not sure that there are too many of us in there. I thought this might be a great place to start a tribe-thread, as I'm sure amidst all the DDC's there should be a good group of us. I think that there are some things that are especially relevant (or just particular to us bigger women) that happen in pregnancy.

Also this way those folks who are further along can tip those of us who are less further along, and hopefully the thread will be available to future mommas!

I'll start, I'm Leah, 15w2d today, 5'4", original weight hovers btn 250-255, and still weighing in at that, so far, which is weird, but my CNM hasn't stressed about it, so I won't.

How 'bout you all?

Hello I'm heather and i'm 32 weeks 4 days. My weight before pregnancy was 205 and i'm at 230 right now. I live northwest of Fort worth texas. Thankfully the only pregnancy issue i've had is having a transverse/oblique seated baby.

Howdy Heather! Good to see you! I'd say it sounds like you're doing well, which is my hunch for most plus-sized pregnant women (rather than some of that alarmist "big women have more issues" bunk I see here and there!). I'm so glad to hear it!

Is the transverse/oblique positioning giving you any trouble? I believe my sister's last was that way, and she had to sleep the whole third trimester sitting up! Oy yuckolah, I hope you don't have to deal with that!

You know, I was thinking about something, and I wonder if anyone else experiences this. I'd like to venture that those of us plus-sized women who are ok with our bodies tend to handle (or not even have) those negative tendencies you see in many smaller women, who just can't stand how huge they are! A friend ofmine who's in her 7th month, is a tall slender (~size 8) woman refuses to go swimming, even though she wants to, because she's so huge. Now mind you, she's only pregnant-huge, which IMO is a-ok. Me, being my size, would certainly go swimming at 7 months if I wanted to, because I do now, and why would I let my looks stop me from going swimming? And then I thought, well I've already dealt with my body in skimpy swimwear, and accepted it. And here the only time she really deals with these issues (of being too big) is during pg. Maybe we bigger women are armed with years of self-acceptance? Just a theory I've got.

Hi there!

I'm Kari and 5'2" and around 215ish. I tend not to weigh myself much. I wear an XL on top and I'm a 1X on bottom.

This is my third pregnancy and, amazingly enough, I've weighed close to the same amount going into all 3! (even though my first pregnancy was in 1990 and it's now 17 years later)

ETA: I'm at about the 8 week mark in this pregnancy!

Heya Yeah, i have been blessed. I may be heavy but i wasnt unhealthy going into the pregnancy. I've never had high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. I've been careful this whole pregnancy as well to ensure my babies healthy delivery. I haven't had any real problems, though he does love to reach up and poke me in the ribs sometimes and play kickball with my bladder and cervix. I just want him to turn so that i can have a vaginal delivery and he still has a 75% chance of turning on his own before 40 weeks. I sleep kinda half on my side half on my stomach with a pregnancy pillow under my belly and a pillow along my chest to elevate me. I can't sleep on my back or sitting up unless im exhausted.

Hi all! I am almost 37 weeks pg with my fourth. I am 5'8" and was 215 going into this pregnancy. I think I was actually healthier and thinner going into this pregnancy than my others (well except my first). I am planning a UC in a few weeks. I have had a sick pregnancy but I don't think that is related to my size at all. I have also been dealing with the transverse lying baby. My last was transverse and my first was posterior so am not too worried. I do think I am more accepting of my pregnant body than some thinner women that can't handle the changes. My one complaint is that being fat no one really ever comments on me being pregnant in public. I know I don't want everyone's comments but a little recognition would be nice. I have gained about 20 pounds this pregnancy and am quite happy with that. Nice to see you all!

Hi Ladies

I am almost 36 weeks and started this pregnancy at about 220 and have gained about 15. I have also experience the "no one commenting" on my pregnancy when I go out. I take it 2 ways....I would love to be showered with all the "ohh your pregnant...when are you due...etc." but at the same time it has been wonderful just to do my thing...maybe just a little slower now.

One thing I really did enjoy was that I didn't have to graduate into maternity pants until 6-7 months. I bought 2 pair of maternity jeans and one capri and I have been rotating these for the last couple of months....boy am I ready to be done wearing them!!! I never bought any maternity tops....just wore a bunch of baby-doll style and t's from Lane Bryant.

I'm Dani, due with #2 on 1/3/08. I was 214 pre-pregnancy and now at 20 weeks I'm around 225? : I am a little hung up on the weight because I feel guilty for not losing the baby weight from #1. Before children I was 175-180 for years.

Anyhow - now that I've graduated into maternity wear (didn't need it until now) I am experiencing a few comments, but only when I'm buying baby supplies. That's okay - like others I hate being fawned over by strangers.

Great idea for a thread.

I'm Sarah, mother of 3 and one on the way (24 weeks)! My children are 5.5, 3.25, and 19 months.

I was 237# just before my BFP....I know because I joined Weight Watchers at practically the same moment I conceived! I lost 5# before I realized I was pg, then they kicked me out, LOL! So, I'm saying my "official" prepregnancy weight was 232#, then I lost 10# in the first tri (not sick, I just always lose weight at first...I think pregnancy jumpstarts my metabolism! ).

I stayed at 222# until I was 21 weeks, and was fine with that--mw was cool too. Then, in just the last 3 weeks, I've suddenly gained about 6#!!! My diet hasn't changed, my activity level hasn't changed....not really sure why it all came on at once that way, but as long as it is slow and steady from here on out, I'm not too worried.

I have, in the past, had no trouble losing the pregnancy weight fairly quickly. I don't gain more than 20-25#, and have always been at or below my prepregnancy weight by 6 weeks pp.

I hope that will be the case again this time, and I hope to start back to WW meetings as soon after the birth as I feel ready to. I'll be 30 in June, and I'd really like to break that 200# barrier by then, KWIM?

Before this pregnancy, I'd started getting pretty active with dh (he's a runner) and I even did a 5K (run/walk) at 17 weeks, but now PSD and arthritis in my lower back is keeping me from doing much....I really hope to get back into the swing of things this spring, because I was just starting to actually *enjoy* running, LOL!

It's good to meet you all, and it will be nice having our own tribe! Other than back trouble and PSD late in pregnancy, I've had no pregnancy issues with any of my babies. All of them have, so far, been posterior though. And since I tried everything under the sun to prevent that last time, I'm pretty much resigned to the idea that back labor is my fate! Could be worse though....at least I know what to expect, and I know I can get through it!

wow, you are all making me feel REALLY fat. lol

I am 28 years old, 5'5 and 1/2 and weigh 324 pounds. I was just approved for my stomach surgery before I found out I was pregnant. I am in a size 26/28 clothing and thankfully I have only put on 5 pounds this pregnancy. I will still be having the procedure done in the next 3 years, but we may want just one more child before then.

Here, I'll make you feel a tad bit better. I am 21 weigh about 291 and am a size 22/24 in jeans. I have gained 6lbs. and am in my 30th week. I have always been healthy. The dr.s around here were really concerned about my size as it related to GD, high blood pressure, and colesterol, but I have always been right on and fine. The MDC moms were right as the u/s tech told me yesterday that I do have an anterior placenta. I thought that I just had too much fluff when I couldn't feel movement at 23 weeks. I still wear all of my prepregnancy clothes. You can tell that I am pregnant because instead of everything moving out like it normally does, everything moved up and forwards out!! it's like I have a big lump right under my breasts. Do you intend on striving for weight loss pp and how do you intend to do it? I have always been one to accept myself as I am, but this time I would like to give it a serious try.

Hi gals! I am on baby #4 and this is my heaviest pregnancy. I was more than 100 pounds thinner with my others.

I am 5'10 and wear a size 24 pant. I am 312 pounds now (305 pre-pregnancy, so I have gained only 7 pounds) am 26 weeks along. Normally I would have gained 30 pounds by now, but having a hard time maintaining weight with this pregnancy.

I am having a hard time finding maternity pants that fit me in sz 24, fit my thighs AND are tall enough. I will start needing long pants (because of cold) just about one month before I am due

Even maternity pants (capris) are giving me fits in the thigh area. My girth really expanded in butt and thigh with my third pregnancy.

I am planning a homebirth with midwives and my mother is absolutely sure I will have GD, toxemia or something else due to my weight AND I will surely have a dead baby.

While my BP is currently holding steady at about 120/84, I do have a history of toxemia and PIH. However, even though I am much bigger, I eat much better and am healthier now than with my other births.

I can't guarantee I won't get high BP, but I am absolutely sure I won't get toxemia this time (had it the first two times, but only PIH last time).

My worst issue right now (other than being down so many months with Hyperemesis that I feel so out of shape) is that I am not getting enough water and protein and my urine isn't always that great. I've got some protein and ketones whowing up. There's a worry that I will risk out of my HB if I don't start eating and drinking better consistently.

Jessica, I have the two tummies too. The top is way up high and protruding, but the bottom is just sort of sagging. I can't wear all my pre-pregnancy stuff (except a pair of gauchos) but they aren't that far off either.

HI everyone! I would say I probably belong in this group too. This is my 4th pregnancy but actually I am thinner now than I ever have been during pregnancy before. I had Gastric Bypass 1 yr ago and have lost 120 pounds but I am still a little overweight and I know that I will probably gain a little back through my pregnancy. This time last year I weighed 312 pounds and as of yesterday I am 192 and wearing a size 14 for now. I am trying really hard to eat right during this pregnancy so I don't gain too much of what I worked so hard to lose.
I do feel better now than I ever did and I know this is going to be my best pregnancy yet, I'm looking forward to being able to move around a little easier. I still want that cute little pregnancy belly and I hate that I get so jealous when I see them, but I still have extra skin from losing weight so fast so I will never have that.

Hi! I'm 5'9" and weighed in at 305 my first ob/gyn appointment, which was at 13 weeks (18 weeks now). I started last pregnancy (DS is 9 months) at 292, so I'm quite a bit heavier. I've given up entirely onmaternity clothing, because between my weight, height, and Jewish laws of modesty, I just don't thinkit can work. Instead, I am buying my work wardrobe (just finished school) in size 28-30 and hoping that works.

I think people are really afraid tomention pregnancy to an overweight woman because some women just have a big belly even when they're not pregnant. Trust me, my mother is one of them -- she looks pregnant even now, at age 55. Last pregnancy, one of my classmates overheard me talking about babies with a friend and asked if I had just found out I was pregnant. I was 39 weeks and had spent the entire semester basically leaning back in class with my hand on my bump "listening" for my baby!

At first I was sad that my belly button didn't pop, but I kind of have to laugh at my belly. My navel looks like it is closing up and I look like a have a crease across it from my 2 tummies!! When this baby drops is it going to be opposite? Big tummy below and little tummy up top? I have been lucky since my waist has stayed the same. However, by the end of the day I do have to unbutton!!

Hello ladies! I'm 29 weeks with baby number 3. I weigh 270 now, which is also what I weighed when I found out I was pregnant. I've only gained 10-15 pounds with each of my other 2 and had almost 9 pound babies. My midwife thinks that my metabolism must work better when I'm pregnant. I haven't had any serious issues with being heavy and pregnant.

I totally relate to the two tummy thing! I didn't show at all with DS (my 1st) until 8 months, but I was also my heaviest non-pregnancy weight when I conceived him, so was pleasantly surprised when I looked in the mirror one day after delivery after the swelling when down and had check bones again! With this being the 3rd pregnancy in the last 4 years, I'm showing more this time. But I still have people looking at my belly and not wanting to say anything! I do miss some pregnancy sympathy, but I'm glad I don't have people asking stupid questions! The work I do is pretty odd and involves lifting 30 or so 25 pound boxes a day, and so I just told everyone I work with I was pregnant and now they are great about helping out. But with my black vest on they really gave me a once over when I told them I was 7 months!

I love this thread! And I agree that I don't have a problem going swimming with my big belly cuz that's the only way I ever go

Yay! For us swimmers with big bellies! Pregnant, or not!

I am so glad to see so many here! It's wonderful! Welcome everymomma!

I ordered some maternity pants from motherhood.com and they arrived yesterday. I put them on, and there really doesn't seem to be much difference between them and regular clothes except that the top is all stretchy! I hope there's room for any growth, but I suppose I really won't need too too much, from what you all say. Though I do notice, without any real weight gain to speak of, I'm finding it harder to wear my regular pants without wierd things happening, like the zipper suddenly taking notice of gravity! So the maternity pants (as they are zipper free) will work nicely there!

So it seems from what everyone is saying the waist sorta sticks around instead of vanishing! Shucks, I wanted to be waist free! ha!

Hi! I'm here too. I'm newly pregnant, 4 weeks. I'm 5'5", weigh 216 right now. With my daughter I got pregnant at 266lbs, delivered at 271lbs, natural drug free birth. I had an easy pregnancy with no complications, although I was on Metformin due to PCOS. I'm not on Met right now, although I'm going to see an OB to see what my hormone levels are like and whether I should get back on it as a precaution.

Good to see all the curvy mamas-to-be!

Well, my waist certainly doesn't stick around...I had to start wearing maternity clothes at around 16 weeks (actually should have started sooner, but we hadn't told anyone about the pg yet and I didn't want my clothes to announce it, LOL!) and I definitely get a huge round tummy toward the end. But that could have a lot to do with the fact that I'm very short, and there's just nowhere for the baby to go, except out!

I love being pregnant....it's the only time I have rock-hard abs!

ETA: I guess that inspite of being overweight (okay, obese by clinical standards ), my weight doesn't tend to settle in my waist so much. Non-pregnant, I still have a (modified!) hour-glass figure....most of my weight is hips/thighs/butt and boobs! That's probably why I have a pretty pronounced shape change in pregnancy. Although most people are still too timid to ask about my pg, for fear I'm not! Can't say as I blame them.....

Hi mamas - so glad to have this thread! I'm 29 y/o and nearly 13 weeks with baby #2. I had just made it back down to my first pre-pregnancy weight of 276 when I found out I was pregnant, and so far haven't had any signifigant gain, thought with the last I was up to 312 at 40 weeks, so I'm prepared for anything.
I'm due on 2-29, and I'm not really showing yet, just looking a little more fluffy. It's funny cause in general, when someone at work wanted to tell me I looked nice (like when I got a haircut, or bought new shoes) they'd just say "oooh, it looks like you've lost weight" as if it was the ultimate compliment. I have heard this literally every week from someone for years, and all of the sudden they're not saying it. haha
I, also, am a proud owner of the two-tummy. Even though I end up in maternity clothes by about 6 months, I don't actually lose my waist and get a round belly until about 36 weeks, so no cute stretchy maternity tops for me in the near future.
Swimming is a must, though. I live in Forida, and being large and pregnant in the summer requires some serious water immersion.
Yay for us!

I definitely have two tummies but must also buy maternity clothes as I am just that much on the side of pregnant that my previous pants aren't fitting and my shirts are a bit short to put over maternity pants or unzipped pants. I am having no fun with that.

A few of my "maternity" tops are actually just extra long, empire waist or fitted boobular () tops from any store that seem to be doing well for me in maternity. I wasn't wearing these tops pre-pregnancy because they were... well I felt like a hoochie mama. But in this heat, it's all I can wear and feel comfortable! SO game on!

I figure this fall/winter I will throw a black sweater/zippered sweatshirt over the tops for warmth, but keep wearing some of them for breastfeeding and/or while I get my figure back *snort*

And that's one of my only worries about being so big and preggo. I had quite a bit of tummy before and now I wonder how bad I will sag in the front after babe is born. I am way more saggy there now while pregnant than I was before!

Hi everyone.

I guess I found my tribe.

I am 24 weeks preg with my first. So far I have gained nothing and am not yet wearing any maternity clothes. I do not look pregnant at all! My mw says I don't have to worry about not gaining any weight, as long as I am healthy.

My blood pressure is fine and so is all of my blood work. I proud to be one of those people who can carry a bit of extra weight but still maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The one change I have seen in my body is the shifting of all my weight forward, and the addition of a double belly.

I don't know what I am going to do if I ever need to move into maternity clothes. I can't find anything I like! I really dislike Lane Bryant's regular clothes (they are not cut correctly for my body shape), so I can't imagine I would have much success with their maternity line. I ordered a pair of pants from Motherhood maternity plus sized line, and I hated them, too. The cut just didn't work for me! I am naturally curvy, with heavy thighs and wide hips and a short, small waist. In order to get a waist that fits, I end up with pants that are way to tight in the hips and thighs.

Jenn, it sounds like we might be TSAB!

I end up with pants that are too big in the waist because I *refuse* to melt my thighs and butt and pour them in a smaller size, LOL! Then I have to alter the waists....not really a hard job if you know what you are doing (or know a competant seamstress) but it's a PITA, plus the extra expense if you pay someone to do it. For maternity clothes, I hate to put the effort into them when I won't be wearing them all that long, yk?

Elastic is my friend! I've not yet invested in a Bella Band or Belly Hugger, but I think that would prolly be a good thing for me. I just hate to order something like that online (plus I keep talking myself out of it, because surely I could make something like that for a lot less $$!! But I know I never will....) but I don't find anything locally.

Anyway, if I ever get on the ball, I'd like to order a couple. Maybe even spring for some truly comfortable maternity underwear, too!

I have a bella band and I love it. I used it early in my pregnancy to wear regular t-shirts longer and cover that my pants didn't quite zip and button anymore. Now I use it under that lower belly to hold up my maternities that are still falling off. My maternity pants are mostly LB and they seems to be very generous in the hip/thigh area and that's where I carry my weight too. But I haven't gained any weigh, so technically I'm loosing a bit of my butt and thighs.

But I have a great suggestion for anyone who wants a bella band and doesn't want to spend the money. Go to a used clothing store and buy a Lycra shirt (the cami-type super stretchy stuff if I have the type wrong) that is too small for you by a size or two and cut it off right under the arm pits. Then you have a nice hem that can stick out of the bottom of your regular shirts and hold your pants up for $1-$3 dollars instead of $18 and that type of fabric doesn't fray in the wash.

Oh, and I can't stand having the bella band over my belly now!

Hi I am currently 27 weeks (yay) and i weighed 258 before pregnancy and I weigh *258* still. This is my second pregnancy and I weighed about the same for that one as well though i gained 30 lbs for that one. I felt a little more ill then what I think is normal for me during this pregnancy and that and a better diet has kept my weight down. My trick to maternity clothes because i'm one of those people who just needs them by week 8 this time is that since most plus sized shirts are cut basically the same as maternity shirts, just wear my regular shirts and buy the maternity pants. I also have the double belly that is slowly starting to grow together. What really annoys me though is that since I've kind of lost fat and gained baby I have this curtain of skin that just hangs off my belly. What am I supposed to do about that? oh well. I hope that after the baby is born a combination of breastfeeding, better diet (basically the same diet I've been on for the pregnancy), and daily walks will help me lose weight. My goal is just 175, I just want to be healthy. I have long ago accepted that I will never be a small person ad I am happy with that. Its good to know that there are so many other ladies just like me out there.
