My mw said that "stripping the membranes" is a misleading term because it sounds like you are breaking the bag of waters. It is not the same thing at all apparently. She said it is more of a "vigorous internal exam" where they run their finger all around the edges of the cervix where some membranes are attached. She said it can stimulate your body to release oxytocin which is what can kick you into labor.
