Hi, I am just wondering how accurate ultrasounds are in predicting the baby's weight. I am in my 37th week and was given an estimate of 7lbs. Any one else had their baby's weight predicted by ultrasound? How close to right was it?

I don't think they're very accurate at all. Many women have been induced or pushed into a C-sect because the baby appeared too large on a U/S and when they delivered, the baby was nowhere near that big.

What's funny is, 7 pounds is always a safe bet, because it's an average weight.

I was told my DS would be about 7lbs and he ended up being 8lb6oz. All of my friends with kids have had their babes' weights UNDER predicted by at least a pound.

I don't know if I know of a single woman who's u/s weight prediction was accurate. Not to say it doesn't happen but...

Surviving sleep deprivation one day at a time with dd (Oct '11) & ds (Oct '08).

2 weeks before DD was born, she was measured as weighing 6.5lbs.

2 days before DD was born, another u/s, they said she would weigh 5lbs I made them measure again, and they said 5lbs 4oz.

She weighed 7.5lbs when she was born

So no, I don't think they are in any way accurate.

From eveything Ive read it is VERY dependent on the sono tech but 1 POUND either way which is a HUGE difference. They almost had a friend of mine convinced to have a csection because the baby was measuring 10lb 10oz he weighted 9lb2 oz still good size but NOT 10+

Yeah, accurate? Not so much... With DS1 (who is 5 now) I had a u/s exactly 1 week before he was born, and they said he'd weigh 9 lbs... 1 week later he was born, and weighed 11 lbs 1 oz ... I wouldn't really go by a u/s weight estimate myself... hehehe

I have one friend whose u/s prediction was within half a pound... that's pretty close for u/s weight measurement. I don't buy the whole u/s weight measurement thing. I think it is far too often used to scare women into induction or c-section.

My aunt was told that her ds would be over 9 pounds. He was 6#10oz.

With my dd, I had an u/s a week and a half before she was born. They estimated her at 6#8oz. She was born at 7#1.5oz. So they were probably pretty close. I still wouldn't depend on u/s for size.

At my 38 week check-up they did an ultrasound and estimated my son at 6lbs 13 oz and 4 days later he was born at 7lbs 1oz. I was pretty impressed, I thought that was pretty close!

at 37 weeks they told me 5 lb 10 oz. At 38.5 weeks he came out 6 lb 2 oz so pretty accurate for me.

During an NST they estimated my DD at 8lbs. She was born the next morning at 10lbs. Not even close, and I highly doubt she gained 2 lbs in under 24 hours.
