I have a question about this drug.

What did they for women that went over their "due date" before they had Pit? And why do Dr's, etc, push this if we go over??

Before women just waited for the baby as did the Dr.

Why do they induce for being "overdue" now in absence of medical issues? Because pregnancy is a disease which must be controlled and managed.

You might consider reading "pushed" by Jennifer Block. Lots of info about the history of medicalized birth in it. Highly recommend.

I think they push it also for their own convenience. If you know when your patients will give birth (during business hours of course) then it's easier to plan a golf game, dinner out, etc.

The Business of Being Born address pitocin as well but not into great depth.

The EDD all of the sudden becomes an expiration date and "they" think the baby needs to come out now and push pitocin which then sends the baby into distress causing the mother to have a c/s. IMO, just another way for the docs and the hospitals to make more $$. They want mothers in and out of the birthing rooms in a X amount of time to make room for the next "patient".

The mainstream medical community is just not taught about natural birth. Anything natural these days is considered "alternative" or "unconventional".

I'd second this recommendation. I found Pushed to be a very interesting read, and it certainly makes you think! When I was induced with my first, I was told by the doctor that statistically, the percentage of infant mortality and morbidity increases with every week over 40 weeks. What she didn't tell me was that the increase is so minimal that you still have more chance of being hit by a bus or falling helicopter than of having a stillbirth just because you went over 41 weeks. So, you know, maybe staying indoors and waiting would be the best bet, just to avoid those buses that might increase your own risk of death!

Oh, this is a good idea! I wish this could have happened before my first child was born. I'm jsst glad it was written in time for my second pregnancy.

Bill Gates must be looking for something to do now that he's retired, and he has the cash to spare! Maybe he could set up this anonymous mailing of Pushed to all pregnant women!

I knew the answer...I just wanted to see what everyone thought about it.

My DH is a surgical nurse and even he hates working with idiot DR's. The stories he tells are AMAZING. How Dr's act when they aren't around us...:
