I meant to get a cleaning before I got pregnant but it did not happen. I have called around and all the dentists are "needing" an x-ray. I did some reading and there was a study done in 2004 that suggested having dental x-rays while pregnant increased the risk of low birth weight babies--no thanks! All I want is a cleaning. I'll come back in 6 months and you can do the x-ray and and other stuff I need...

My OB said be sure to be double-shielded if I got x-rays with my cleaning, and that getting them wouldn't be a problem.

I went to the dentist and he said he'd rather not do x-rays at all while PG unless he, the hygienist or I had a specific concern that needed an x-ray for a closer look.

He's of the 'wait 6 months' camp too

Keep looking. I just went for a cleaning at a dentist I've never seen before. She didn't need x-rays.

Surviving sleep deprivation one day at a time with dd (Oct '11) & ds (Oct '08).

Weird. I've been to the dentist during all of my pregnancies and none of them have insisted on x-rays once I told them I was pregnant. They just scheduled the x-ray for my next cleaning after my EDD.

Do the dentists KNOW you are pregnant?

When I went for a cleaning they would not do an x-ray, I don't think I went in after the birth either to have an x-ray.

Why would you have to get x-rays for a cleaning? That doesn't make any sense. I'm due for a checkup (I'm military, so we have to have one per year) but I went in and said I wanted a cleaning only and I'd come back for the rest later and they had no problem.

I'd just make the appt and when they ask you to do the x-ray, say no.

I just had a cleaning in June and though I was due for an x-ray, they wouldn't do it because I was pg. They still did the cleaning.

Sounds to me they want to do the x-ray so they can get some extra$$$.

tell them you're pg and not comfortable with xrays.

my dentist has a form that anyone, pg or not, can sign to opt out of xrays.

Yep! You can opt out of anything you don't want (or find a new dentist). I've been waiting to get a root canal for 8 wks until delivery (yeah, not fun but I can live).

I do believe the study was done with double shielding -- I could be wrong, I'd have to read it again.

Dentists who insist on x-rays while the patient is pregnant should be avoided, in my opinion.

During my last pregnancy I had x-rays done. They double shielded me, and took the single x-ray they needed to do my root canal/crown.

Kairi weighed in at 8lbs, 9oz.

My dentist has always waited until the next appointment if I even suspected I could be pregnant.
