Does anyone know of a safe/effective herbal remedy for insomnia that you can take while pregnant? Can I take Valerian Root? I forgot to ask my dr.

I've found taking a calcium supplement plus NAtural Calm supplement at night helps me sleep so much better. Maybe not what you were looking for, but it really helps me.

I'm pretty sure Calms Forte from Hyland's homepathic is okay in pregnancy, too, but I don't really use it since the cal-mag works for me.

I get horrible insomnia when I'm pregnant.

-- Exercise during the day. Especially outside. NOT in the evening.
-- Cal-Mag supps. before bed.
-- Small, light snack before bed.
-- No computer/TV within 30 minutes of bedtime.
-- Go to bed and get up at the same time every day.

I am newly pregnant and am having the same issue with insomnia. I was on Ambien before becoming pregnant, but learned that it is not safe until 3rd trimester. As for what is safe in 1st and 2nd trimesters, I have only found, Unisom and Benadryl. The problem with herbal supplements such as valerian root and melatonin is that they are not FDA tested. We don't know what a "safe" dosage is for adults, much less a fetus. That's what I've been told anyway. I would talk to you Dr if it's giving you a lot of trouble. I'm just getting through with short daytime naps. I can do it right now since I stay at home with my daughter.

Good luck!

Melatonin and/or Calms Forte. The information I've found regarding problems with Melatonin are linked with high doses. Also, perhaps passionflower tincture, or Bach's, Sleepy tea, also, I recently read an article stating that deficiency in Omega oils can lead to insomnia, as it prevents your body from producing normal levels of seratonin and melatonin.

Hypnobabies Peaceful Sleep Now cd!

http://hypnobabies.com/store/shop.ph...&cid=4&start=0

Works great! Some nights I would lay in bed for 2+ hours before falling asleep. The Hypnobabies cd is 30 minutes long I think and I'm always dead asleep before it finishes. I listen to it every night. Highly recommended! It teaches you a cue for falling back asleep if you wake up in the middle of the night as well.

Liquid cal/mag
Skullcap
Melatonin

I take the lowest dose of melatonin as possible since supplementing with it is controversial. I think I take about 300-600 mcg.

I have used all three at once, but typically only use melatonin when I'm REALLY bad (like having painful BH contractions every five minutes).

Cal/mag makes me tired and skull cap helps relax me. They also help with restless leg.
