I keep hearing a little chime sound when I'm online, and I thought there was something odd going on with my computer - but I've noticed it seems to be only when I'm on MDC. Can someone tell me what it is? - Lillian

Okay, I've narrowed it down, and it happens only when I click on the Learning at Home forum - I don't think it happens anywhere else.

Well, it's gone. No more chime now that I've asked about it, even though it had gone on for days. Sort of like when you take a car to the shop and describe a rattle, and the rattle stops. Lillian

I just heard this! Not on the learning forum, but on the TAO board. I would click on a thread, and "ding!". It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes.

I'm pretty sure the chime is an ad. It's probably on rotation somewhere on certain pages. It used to happen to me on facebook and I was baffled too! Then I found the ad...

What about chiming every hour, on the hour, for those of us who spend too much time here.

Are you on Internet Explorer? It is going through some tough issues right now; maybe it has something to do with how IE is reading the code on those pages. PCs also will make ding sounds as notifiers, there is a chart somewhere that says what they mean, I'll look for it.

The chime sound has been attached to users who have received too many warnings from the moderators. It alerts you to be cautious about what you are posting.

I've never received a warning from a moderator - or, I should say, not since years ago when a moderator didn't realize at first that my website is non-commercial, doesn't even have Amazon affiliate links, and costs me money rather than making any. Once she realized it was just a public service, she was fine with my links to it. And awhile back, a moderator had to reluctantly delete a post of mine because of some minor issue that she realized at the time I wasn't even aware of, and she was very nice about it, but there was no reason to give a warning - it was obviously just one of those things, and the only one that had come up in the several years I've been been a forum member. - Lillian

No - Safari for Mac. And it never happens anywhere but on MDC. It happens every time I sign on now. Maybe I'll google it and see what comes up... Thanks! - Lillian

My Mac has a feature where I can set it to announce the time every hour on the hour - kinda' nice, because it's all too easy to lose track of time late at night. Lillian

well, seeing as we so recently had the ad-hijack/virus problem here, I hope TPTB are looking into this seriously, since there is no telling what it might be associated with.

nothing more to say I guess :

Your sure it's not your own e-mail in the back ground? As I surf, I periodically hear a "chime" that is telling me I have new mail. I keep my e-mail open all the time and have it set to check every 10 minutes as well as chime when I get something.

Perhaps it is on your own computer rather than the net?

No, the email program has a very distinctive sound, and I can visually see a little graphic when an email comes in. I originally thought it was something on my own computer, and it was driving me crazy trying to figure out what - and then I noticed in only happened when I was entering MDC or changing pages within MDC. It was going on every time yesterday, but there's hadn't been one chime today. Go figure.... Lillian

You see, it does not want to be found. So, since you are looking for it and telling others it exists, it will hid. But the moment you forget about it, it will creep back out again!

Does it only do it if you are typing? Because Windows will chime at you if you're backspacing into nothing.

Oh hey, I've taken cars in to repair shops enough to know how that works! I had one that used to break down in intersections, but it would never do that for the repairmen I took it to. The last time it did that I sat alongside the road and cried. That car model eventually got recall notices over the problem, so I knew it wasn't just me. Lillian

Nope. And I have a Mac. It does it before I even have a chance to type. - Lillian

Do you hear other strange sounds? I don't hear anything.

But, I have the sound turned OFF. Maybe try that.
