I feel lost and bewildered. Can someone point me to the avatar rules? I know whatever I pick before reading the rules will be entirely against the AU (Avatar agreement smile.gif)

I also notice that even just having this thread open in a tab is making my adobe plug-in crash. I think it's the video ad at the side causing it, as it crashes too.

Another vote for asking for zip, birth date, and being able to be found by email needing to be removed.

Overall - I greatly preferred the old VB board. I've been on several message board that switched to this format, and they all ended up switching back in 6 months or so.

Do we have to verify our email address before it becomes official?  Because I entered in a fake email address, which I obviously can't verify.  If there isn't a way to shut off friend finder very soon, I think I'm just going to delete my account and every post I've made.  Which sounds like a PITA, but well worth it if it's the only way to scrub my past posts.  There are other places on the internet that I can get anonymous advice, and while they may have different perspectives on parenting, I'd much rather weed though replies I don't agree with then to have my account here open to people that I know in real life.  That is a HUGE privacy breach, and I'm really very upset that Mothering.com thought that users want their accounts searchable by people they know in real life.  People post very sensitive things here, that could have very real personal or professional repurcussions (which is apparently spelled wrong, but I don't know how I'm supposed to correct it... right clicking isn't working).

I would like to suggest making the "Fertility" section (with the TTC forums) separate from "Pregnancy & Birth", since they are not related to pregnancy & birth at all.

I see your two boys hugging. orngbiggrin.gif

To change an avatar, click My Profile at the top of the page. On the left it should show your current picture. Under that should say Replace Image. Clicking that should give you a popup to select a pic on your computer or enter a link on the web. HTH!

Also, (sorry- venting here), the not being able to hide forums sucks.  I hit "All New Posts" and of course the first post is from my would-have-been-DDC.   I'm not very happy with these changes at all.

If you look at the Friend Finder one would see that it is OPT-IN, no one is signed up for it automatically. I agree that would NOT be ok but that isn't how that function works.

I have a couple questions:

I confess I have not read through the whole thread, please forgive me!  But that's one of my questions--on vBulletin, one of the options was to set the page so that you could view up to 200 posts per page, and I loved that feature--I could scroll through a long thread without having to click through to each page!  PLEASE tell me that option still exists somewhere??

Second question:  I'm really missing my Senior Member tag, and I see that many people still have there's, so can someone please tell me how to recover mine?

Other than that, I'm so far liking the switchover.....the siggies aren't as pretty now, but I'll survive! ;-)

I don't see how to turn off the avatar, just a link to replace it. Is there a source of free avatar pictures somewhere? Can I get that pretty tree that others seem to have as a placeholder?

Thanks! I think this is going remarkably smoothly considering what a gigantic undertaking it is.

Friend finder doesn't work unless you put in an email address. It won't sign you up for it automatically, no one can search your email address.

Where does it say that?  I didn't see that on the page.  It just asks if I want to find my friends using their email address (which I tried but the import thing isn't working).

Thank you.  I know there are others that would like that feature too, and we'd all appreciate it.  For now, I'm trying to subscribe to the forums I want to read, and just read the updates from there.

Can you explain this a little more? I just did the friendfinder, and because I am one of my contacts in gmail, my username and email address show up in the serach results, with the option to subscribe to my posts. Maybe in tinkering, I accidently opted-in? Where specifically is this option located?

Click on "my profile" at the top of the page. Then scroll down to view your avatar. Right under it theres a link that says 'replace'.

And its your boys hugging.

If you go into edit acct settings, reverse the selection on your avatar choice, see if that fixes it. Although, if you have images turned off on your browser, that will also make them disappear.

To clarify, anyone who is registered here who I have ever emailed with the email I used to register here (the only one I use) can figure out what my screen name is and "subscribe" to me and thereby stalk me? Where is the option to opt-out, because my cursory search proved that I am currently opted-in.

I must need to find some patience.  Im sure its still the transitional phase that was causing me to NOT see the actual pic.  I could some other peoples, and some I couldnt. Now I can see it just fine.

Another Q.  WE used to have a member search.  Is that where friend finder/invites comes into play?  Im afraid to click on it at the top incase it enrolls me in some kind of opt in.  *shiverring smiley*

No, not unless you sign up they cannot. I don't even know that it is attached to usernames.

I will check and see about how to remove things once they are in there.

Under the new format, I see some lovely default avatars. Trees, peace signs, globes, etc.  I would have been happy with any of these.

Mine was arbitrarily assigned as that Sacagawea-papoose-thingy, but I'm a dude. The avatar is certainly not descriptive of me; maybe the only default avatar that doesn't work.

As I understand it (yes, been through the tutorial a couple of times), I have no option to select one of the other nice default avatars. I'm either stuck with what MDC chose for me (did I mention I'm not a mother?) or finding a photo somewhere else, cropping it to square shape, reducing the size in Photoshop, and uploading it. Seems like a lot of work when a dozen beautiful default designs are in use -- but off-limits. Are there any plans in the works to let members select from several default avatars? Or is this something reserved for Senior Members? For the time being I'm using a sunset photograph that I took with my Canon G10.

Otherwise the new format looks pleasant and functional.

So how does it work then? Does searching sign you up? I was able to find out my friends' screen names who I didn't even know were on MDC and who I never would have been able to tell who they were if FriendFinder didn't connect their email to their screen name for me. I know that a lotof people on MDC have family who they don't want seeing their posts on here. Years and years of caution in hiding their identity for their own privacy/safety has been completely undone in moments. This is a deal breaker for me and, even if fixed eventually, is absolutely unacceptable.
