Yesterday someone asked me why my post included a link for ajowan oil.  I had no idea what she was talking about and couldn't see the link myself, but assumed it must have been some type of ad inserted by MDC.  Then an advertising link showed up in her post replying to me.  (This is the thread in question.)  Was this an accident, or is it something MDC is doing on purpose to bring in revenue?  It would be bad enough to have an ad that was clearly identifiable as an ad inserted into my post.  But to have something I typed turned into an advertising link, with no way for others to tell I didn't do it myself, is completely unacceptable.  Please tell me this isn't something that is going to keep happening!

Hi Daffodil! I'm sure our Administrators will know more, but I believe those links only show up when you are not logged in. When you log in, the ads and links disappear. They are not actually inserted into your posts. I do not see a link when I look at your post. I have removed the link from the post where another user asked you about it.

I was able to see the one in the other person's post when I was logged in.  Now that you've removed it, It still looks like a link, but doesn't do anything when I click on it.

Okay, I just tried viewing that thread when I wasn't signed in.  Wow!  There are quite a few advertising links in there, in my posts and in others.  I'm not sure why the one link showed up even when I was logged in, but maybe it was because the person asking about the link in my post copied and pasted something from that post.

It's disturbing to find out that to people who don't have accounts or aren't logged in it may appear that I've deliberately included a link to some product in my post.  There's no way at all to distinguish a link a poster intentionally included from an advertising link that was put in without the poster's knowledge.  I was never notified that MDC was doing this to my posts.  And people viewing the site aren't notified (as far as I can see) that some links in posts are not created by the poster.  This is so unacceptable to me that it may mean the end of a long (and until now, mostly happy) relationship with MDC.

Hi there. I'm sorry for the delay in responding. We don't know why this has been enabled. We tested it once and then it was disabled because it was intrusive. We are checking on it. I will keep you posted about what we find out. I'm sorry I can't give you more information right now.

Thanks.  I'm glad to hear it's not something you mean to keep doing.

Okey dokey, we checked on it and it has been turned off.  Please let me know if you see it happening any more.

I was just coming on here to ask this. It happened to me today when I was using a different computer.

@rainbownurse We just changed platforms yesterday so there are a lot of things that are different on the site today. Are you still seeing the ads?
