How to change order of posts seen in display

How can I change how a thread appears when I open it? I use a laptop BTW not mobile. Threads seem to open last post first, but sometimes right smack in the middle (threads I'm opening for the first time, as well as ones I've read). My User CP is set to "linear ~oldest post first", yet it doesn't display this way. I went to the FAQ about this and it said: "When you're in a thread, look at the top bar. On the right hand side you'll see 'Display Mode'. Click on this and it lets you change how posts are ordered." yet I see no "display mode" on the top. Please help! This is driving me bananas! Thanks

P.J. how are you arriving at the thread? Are you opening the thread from the forum's threads list page or are you clicking from a link somewhere else?

You have your settings as "linear ~oldest post first". If you go to a forum you never read or post in and open a thread there, what shows first? The first post of the thread by the OP or something else?

If you click into a thread you have read before, you may be placed into the location of the thread based on your last session here on the site. You have been visiting the site a bit sporadically so it's hard for us to troubleshoot why you would be placed into the middle of a thread. That should happen only if you have read it before but not for a thread you have never opened before.

The next time it happens can you grab the URL of the page you are on and a screenshot of where you land so we can take a look?

I just did exactly that, and the very last post (#91 of 91 in this case) showed up first.

Here is a screen shot of that thread I went into, in a forum I never visit. It landed so scrolled down that you can't even see the "#91 of 91" at the top of the reply.

Oh and the URL was: Hope, Healing, and Conceiving- May 2014

ETA: looks like it creates a link instantly. Not sure if you are able to see the URL at all..??

I had to delete and repost it as the original screen shot was showing my full legal name (b/c it shows up on my computer screen as the user)...I had to edit it in iPhoto to blur out the name :-)
It should be there now.

Thanks. I can confirm this is happening for me as well. When I click on the thread, it takes me to the last post in the thread on page 4 instead of the firt post on page 1. Thanks for the screenshot. I'll report this.

Is it happening to you all the time though? As I said, this happens every time I open a thread. Thanks for looking into it

Yes, it is happening for me every time. But it doesn't happen if I am logged out so I imagine something is going on with the settings.

I'm reviving this thread because I have the same problem. I'm assuming this is just the way the site works, and other people don't seem to mind it, because this is the only thread in the site help forum I could find that talks about it, and there doesn't seem to be an answer.

Is there any way to set it so that it doesn't default to the most recent post when you open up the thread? I don't like having to scroll up to read the first post in a thread I've never seen before. And often I have to scroll up twice because the page reloads and defaults again back to the most recent post.

If you go to you User CP < Edit Options < Thread Display - Linear oldest first

It will show you the oldest posts first.

Thanks. I already have it set to that. What I'm talking about is something else, I think. When I click on a thread the screen automatically jumps down to whatever it thinks is the newest message, even if I've never read the thread before. And when I look up at the web address bar there's a # sign and a post number, so it's somehow deciding I should be jumping to a post.

Here's an example. Here's a thread I've never read before. I clicked on it, and it jumped to the last post. Here's what the address bar was showing.

Just to be sure, what are you clicking when you click the threads? Are you Clicking the link in the left column or the right?

The left column. I think I noticed yesterday that I don't have the problem with all the forums. Like I had no problem with the due date clubs, but I did with the other forums.

The link you posted above was it a link you came across in another thread? Looking at the URL of the link it will go directly to a post in the thread rather than start at the top.

No, it's not a link I came across in another thread. It's what was in the address bar when I clicked on the name of the thread from the forum page (left column). Yes, it does go directly to a post lower down in the thread. That's exactly the problem I'm describing. The website automatically adds the #post (number) to the link instead of starting at the top like it should. Don't other people have this same issue? I can't believe it would be unique to me.

Here's another example. I'm just posting these as examples. If I go to the first page of the Site Help forum and click on a post I've never read before, it jumps down to the last post in the thread. Here's what's in my address bar:

I can confirm this issue. I cleared my cache completely, which also logged me out. As a logged out visitor I go to Site Help and click on the thread title for this thread "How to change the order of posts seen in display" and it takes me to the first post. I then cleared my cache again and then went manually typed in the url for the forum index page and then clicked on Site Help. From there I clicked on the title of the thread "How to change the order of posts seen in display". That first loads the thread's main URL How to change order of posts seen in display but very quickly it auto-adds #post18274546 to the end of the URL and takes me to that post in the thread.

Can you confirm what browser you're using for me? Some times script errors occur on our end but they only affect certain browsers.
