Why do some people write "vegan" and others write "veg*n"? Is one acceptable here and the other not? Is there some controversy I am unaware of?

I think veg*n means "vegan or vegetarian", but is shorter than writing all that out.

I agree with curlymom. I write veg*n when I'm talking about both.
