Seriously. If I use quotes, or + or AND ... I get the same crappy results. Over and over and over and over.

"fifth disease pregnancy"
"fifth AND disease AND pregnancy"
"fifth + disease + pregnancy"
fifth disease pregnancy
fifth AND disease AND pregnancy
fifth + disease + pregnancy

I get everything except a result that contains ALL THREE.

So, if we want to be able to do a decent search we're gonna have to pay for it?
Guess I will be stuck with asking the old questions over and over.

nothing more to say I guess :

(ok, so. Im getting carried away. sorry, just been reading about the titanic with my dd 8.)

No offense, but people shouldn't have to pay to get good a good search engine just to find the information they are searching for. I recommend this site to many of my friends and new mothers to be... so if they come to mdc looking for information and are not able to find it... they will stop coming here. I mean, many moms don't have the money to waste on a bell or whistle on a website they frequent. Honestly, from the computer knowledge I have, it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to add or change that feature here. But then again, I'm not familiar with your set up.

Please reconsider just changing the search engine so we can all get what we need....

I came here to post the same complaint- the search engine is pretty worthless. it is good to know why, but pretty frustrating to have to post the same questions over and over again- I think that people will be getting less valuable information because others' won't want to take the time to answer yet another question about reflux (or whatever) when they have already done so.

So much good valuable information that could help us just floating out there in cyber space with no way to grab it. :

I hope the premium edition is something that Mothering.com has to upgrade to, not the users themselves. It is so nice to have this forum to refer newbies to, I would hate to see it go to a pay site.

I think you can get some pretty good results if you use the Advanced Search and be specific. For example, searching for fifth disease (no quotes or +) and narrowing the search to the Pregnancy forum and titles only, I get 25 results, only 6 of which are not about Fifth disease:

Use the Advanced Search and limit your search to the Nutrition and Good Eating forum. It might also help to search titles only.

That thread has gotten sooooo far off its original topic that there could quite possibly be discussion on rubbing yourself with tofu while dancing under a full moon.

This is a tree on fire with love, but it's still scary since most people think love only looks like one thing instead of the whole world. *

I had the same issue today looking for info on treating a fungal infection. I got pages and pages of threads - and that was just in one forum. not helpful.

Have you tried going to the appropriate forum and searching just in that forum? I find that really helpful. For example, go to natural home and body care in the mindful home management forum and I bet you would get lots of information on fungal infections, especially if you search more than once and vary the terms: fungus, athlete's foot (if that is the case), skin infections, stuff like that.

When will we hear more about the premium search function? I would be willing to pay extra for that. I can google for free anytime . Google is an amazing search engine. But, this place is so large that it would be nice to have a narrower and yet more powerful search engine. And, I would assume it would be for pay only because this site and the magazine can't run themselves. Somebody has to help foot the bill.

Thanks!

This is how I search MDC:

Go to www.google.com

Type in whatever I'm searching for, can be with quotes, without, whatever.. (just a normal search).. then type "siteww.mothering.com"

So, for fifths disease and pregnancy:

go to google. In the main seach bar, type ""fifths disease" pregnancy siteww.mothering.com"
and these are your results:
http://www.google.com/search?client=...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

yes that's exactly what I did - I went to health and healing, selected "search this forum" and put in "fungus, fungal, infection, black walnut (I was trying to find info about using black walut hulls to treat a fungal infection) and every variation I could think of.

I got pages and pages of hits, including all those very, very long healing the gut threads - which BTW might contain incredible information but are absolutely impossible to read through to find it.

...

Thanks!
But that also prevents you from seeing any discussions that were started in the wrong place and then locked instead of moved to the correct forum, where they would be found with that type of search.

I just tried clicking Search at the top of the page, then clicking Advanced Search. On the new page I just used 'walnut' as the search term, chose to show results as posts, selected Health and Healing as the forum to search in, and unchecked the 'search child forums also' option. After submitting that, I got 75 posts/4 pages of results (including some from the healing the gut tribe, but as just the posts, they were easier to poke through).

Maybe that will help you a bit? I hope you feel better soon.

Wow, that is a lot of steps over and above what I was doing that works on every other message board I belong to: simply using Advanced Search to search all terms, in quotes or AND'ed ... as I posted originally.

And limiting myself to titles when it's text and info I'm looking for? : Going to individual groups of fourms? Not very user-friendly at all.

I guess I'll stick to searching for free using Google it so I can get what I want. Which is just the sort of complicated search procedure I want to employ when freaking out over something at 3am. :

I wish you guys had not decided it wasn't worth it to have a good search for regular users or people just wandering in who don't feel basic information or the personal experience stories that augment it so well that is simply deleted every couple of years anyway is worth a "premium".

Thanks for the answers, but I really really hope you change your minds.

Also.. I get my results as posts instead of threads, that way I can search the specific posts to see if they are relevant..
