It means that the person has "subscribed" to the thread in order to receive e-mail updates [instant, daily or weekly] on the thread. You can subscribe without announcing it - but it's nice sometimes to let people know you are interested but don't yet have anything to say -- especially if not many people have responded yet.

Click the FAQ at the top of this forum or the link in my signature and there is a walkthrough for thread subscriptions there.

I see some posts with people saying they are "subbing." I don't get it.

Anyone care to help a newbie with the lingo?

TIA

subscribing, so they will get notification of responses to the thread. Posting to a thread is the easiest way to get notification (you set the type of notification in your options).
People generally put that if they are not contributing to the discussion (at least not at that time) but want to follow it.

nothing more to say I guess :

Of course, at the top of the thread, you'll see "thread tools" with a drop-down menu. I can't figure out why so many folks use the subscription-reply method when they can just quietly subscribe via the drop-down menu!

It means they are subscribing to the thread so they can keep up with it.

You can also sub to a thread without posting to it by going to thread tools at the top of the thread.

THANKS!

Wow - I never even saw those buttons! I've always spent hours searching for the threads I've been following, posted on...geeeeez. Could be contributing to the fact that my DH says I spend so much time on MDC he wants to ban me from it...

If I subscribe to something...how and when am I notified of the thread/new posts...ie. how does it work?

When you sub it will ask if you want to be notified of every new post, daily, weekly or no emails to notify you. It is a really useful tool.

You can choose how to be notified. I like to have e-mails sent to me immediately when someone replies so I can read them in my inbox

And I hear you about the MDC addiction except mine is far worse
I'm surprised my fiance hasn't said anything yet. I have been a member almost two months (well, two months as of February 15) and I have almost 700 posts : Man, too much time on my hands...

Thank you so much for the reply. I was trying to be too fast and only looked under the S's for subbing not the F's for forum subbing.

I must slow down from now on.

Thanks again,
Elizabeth

I thought at first this meant substituting, like holding a place for a later message, but I've seen it in places that don't make sense......

Are these threads merged?
Cause it looks very odd, like people are not reading anything and just posting.

nothing more to say I guess :
