Would it be possible to add a subforum for food preservation techniques such as canning, drying, freezing, etc.? I think it would be a great addition to the mdc boards!

Here is a current discussion...
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=918724

TIA!

That's just one of many too! I definitely think a subforum, rather then a tribe, would be awesome for MDCers.

Oh, I agree.

I'm a canning novice (jams and pickled stuff only at this point for the past couple of years) and would love to have a place to ask questions and share recipes.

Yes, I would love a subforum for preserving the harvest. That way all those questions will be in one place. I know they are kinda all over at the moment.

It seems like an excellent sub-forum for Mindful Home Management.

Have y'all considered starting a Tribe?

I don't know if anyone else has thought of it, but I don't like tribes for learning and getting/giving information. Chatting, sure (I can't follow any tribe threads for that either, but that's another story), but it'd be harder to communicate our ideas and get feedback on them with a tribe.... like my turkey stock, I'd want to post a thread and get replies solely for that, not have one post in a long thread that I have to weed through posts to find replies to mine. KWIM? It's not just canning too, dehydrating, freezing, drying, root cellars, all that stuff could go there.

There's already a tribe or two dedicated to that. However, I think a good number of the subforums around here started out as tribes, so obviously there comes a time where the subject outgrows the tribe.

Yes, exactly! A high-volume tribe is an important part of the picture when determining forum organization, which is why I was wondering if there already was a Tribe in existence. I wasn't trying to dismiss the requests but gather more info

Another way to gauge interest on a topic like this might be to list all the existing threads that would go into the sub-forum (sort of how you figured to split off unschooling into its own forum, if that's how you did it.)

I would definitely use this subforum. Food preservation is like an addiction for me. I have an infant and have been sacrificing things like laundry so that I can spend my free time canning, freezing, and dehydrating. :

Right now, posts about preservation are scattered across Diggin' In The Earth, Food & Nutrition, and Frugality & Finances. Just clicking on DITE, I see four threads on the first page alone that would be applicable:

http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=921569
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=921913
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=918724
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=907537

The Food Growing tribe threads used to get so big (like 50 pages) that they started breaking them into monthly threads. I know food growing doesn't always equal preservation, but my experience here has been that it frequently does.

I searched for the longest time trying to figure out where to post canning questions, and I didn't even think to look for a tribe. So, I took a stab in the dark and posted in the Digging in the Dirt forum. Canning and preservation questions seem to be pretty popular there right now.

As a pp said, I think that a tribe conversation would make it difficult to request or share information on specific topics like meat drying versus jam canning!

ITA - It's difficult to figure out where to post those things. I was trying to find out how to preserve something I forraged for, so I put my post in Frugality & Finanaces. Maybe it should have gone in DITD. It's very confusing as it is now. Please set up a sub-forum.

With the price of food going up, there are going to be a lot more of us trying to learn how to preserve.

Another vote for a subforum! I've wanted to post canning equipment questions and have had no idea where to put them. And then after 10 minutes of searching for the right spot I get distracted into other threads and forget why I logged on!!
