Lately I have noticed a number of threads on emergency and disaster preparedness, stockpiling and food storage (for disasters and also to deal with personal emergencies and job loss).

These threads don't seem to have a natural home (mindful home management? frugality & finances? the food forums?), and they also tend to get pretty long and unmanageable (imho).

If there were a forum for this topic, I know I would visit it a lot.

Is there a procedure for suggesting a new forum?

The procedure to request a new forum is posting here.

I will add your request to the list but in the meantime I believe that would go in Mindful Home Management.

Here are some examples of the types of posts that I imagine might belong in the proposed forum.

The posts are currently split between Mindful Home Management and Frugality and Finances (slightly more), with a few posts in other forums.

Posters seem to be unsure of whether to post in MHM or F&F, for example I quote annettemarie in a post titled "Emergency Stockpile Question" (http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=928226):
Quote:
I didn't know whether to post here, the general forum, or organizing. Anywho, moms who stockpile, how do you do it? What do you have? Where do you keep it? How do you keep tabs on it? Under what circumstances would you use it?
Note that several of the stockpiling / Long Emergency threads have gone over 100-200 posts and some had to go to multiple threads (part II, part III etc) due to the number of posts.

I would love a Preparedness subsection to Mindful Home Management. There are so many topics that relate to Preparedness that span a lot of different forums (like Tamagotchi stated). There are also specific topics that don't fit well anywhere, such as preparing for a tornado, hurricane, earthquake, etc. Many people on some of the previous threads that were mentioned ask a lot of questions about how to prepare for natural disasters, as well as economical.

A separate sub-forum would be awesome.: Thanks!

I have been reading all of the threads listed above, and it just seems that I can't ever remember which place I read what in.
Of course, I understand that this would mean moderators would have more responsibilities and that might be too much.
But it sure would be nice to know that it's all in one little spot to post and read in.
Thanks Mods... we love you!!!

I would also love to see a preparedness forum! Food storage can sometimes get caught in limbo between Religions and Home management!

I think mothering could offer a unique outlook on preparedness. Not the usual military or religious spin, but a lifestyle. I'm pumped! :

Considering our state of current affairs - I believe this to be a very timely sub-forum. Right now, I'm just subscribing to relevant ones so a forum would make things so much easier and more efficient. Two thumbs up -

Me too - my favorite is on the homesteading today forum, but I'm so liberal and non-Christian that I get a bit uncomfortable with all the conservative/Christian stuff that comes with the pertinant prepping information...

I love the idea of preparedness & self-sufficiency sharing a forum. It comes up in the country living/off-the-grid forum here on MDC quite a bit, but preparedness & self-sufficiency is a topic for urban & suburban folks too! And it's true that most of the "other" preparedness forums out there have either a strong religious bent or are very big on promoting guns. Which, to each his/her own, but having somewhere not *dominated* by firearms would be awesome!

I also wonder a lot about how to prepare my children for a disaster & how to instill an "I say jump, you say how high?" attitude in a gently disciplined child only in a disaster scenario, if that makes sense.
