We just moved to the area and we're just catching up with all that's been happening with home birth midwives in the area. Apparently midwives need a supporting physician to participate in home births. It seems as though one of the main physicians who was backing many midwives in the area pulled out leaving many practices to close. I'm currently 3 weeks pregnant with my 3rd, and I'd love to have another home birth. Does anyone have any information on this or recommend a midwife who is still participating in home births?

Thanks so much!

http://www.mothering.com/community/t/1354669/sad-day-for-midwives-and-homebirthers-in-north-carolina You might try PM'ing the ladies who chimed in on page 2 about currently practicing MW's.

The MW's mentioned in the pp are all near Charlotte and Asheville, unfortunately. AFAIK, there are no HB MW currently operating in the Triangle.

Surely there are some underground midwives, no? Even in AVL where we still have a practice operating legally there are other, off the radar, options.

All the underground MWs that I know of have stopped practicing b/c of threat of jail time. Of course there may be a fw I've never heard of though. A few years ago, there was several options. Now, they all seem to hav disappeared.

I'll be traveling to Virginia for a homebirth - have had 3 homebirths here in Raleigh/Durham but many of the MW I know are not an option now.  I am in the triangle and the place I'm going is 1 1/2 hour away.  It is not ideal and I have been upset especially with what has happened but it seems to be my only option other than UC.  I did find a local ob/midwife practice that would see me for prenatals and were very fine when I told them my plan.  Even they were upset with what had happened.  I can certainly share who they are but have only interviewed and haven't actually began to see them.  I'm nearly 5 months so I have been searching and questioning for several months now.  Another local friend is also planning to travel and homebirth in VA and we have both talked about mostly getting over that comfort of our own home rather than another home.  The midwife is awesome though and I know it will be worth it!

Amazingly I've met several Dr.'s and other med. professionals also upset with all of this mess.

If you would like to know more about VA please email me privately in about a month or email me now and wait a month as it isn't ready yet.  This is a licensed midwife and legal in VA.
