Homebirth mamas, when did you receive a reimbursement from your insurance agency? I know I should expect it to take a while but my baby is 3 months old already and we really need the money. Thanks!

Oh and we live in CA and have Blue Cross PPO.

It took 5 months with Blue Cross Blue Shield MN but I didn't bug them too much because they weren't supposed to cover any of it and they covered 20%. I was just thankful to get anything back at all!

Why didn't your midwife bill the insurance?

We have Regence BCBS in Oregon, and she called and found out the exact amount we are responsible for, then we pay that, and after baby is born, she bills the insurance.

My insurance plan specifically states that it does not cover out-of-hospital birth or prenatal care by out-of-hospital care providers but my midwife had some other clients who had success getting part of their birth covered when they submitted the claim themselves vs. the midwife submitting it. So I submitted the claim and we got 20% back. It was a nice surprise after waiting for so long.

My midwife did submit the claim. She said she usually had pretty good luck with Blue Cross but I didn't check the plan to see if it would be covered. I just heard from her today and she asked if I had heard anything, so that's probably not a good sign.
