I wanted to cross-post this here since I am considering a home birth & was planning on working with an awesome home birth midwife practice. But it seems things *might* be more complicated now...

Looking for experiences & links-- What makes a pregnancy high risk? Who will give me the most honest answer?

As background, I'm 38 years old, had a natural-ish birth at 31, 3 miscarriages since then (one chemical, 2 first trimester losses), now pregnant again but with a vanishing twin (demise at 9 weeks).

My RE (very smart recurrent loss specialist who I started seeing after my 2nd miscarriage) insists I'm high risk due to AMA & vanishing twin. My midwife (very well-respected CNM who performs home births) says I'm not if high risk & can rejoin her practice. I'm so confused! I don't want to take this lightly, but I'm leaning toward sticking with my midwife. I trust her & assume she doesn't want to take on a high risk pregnancy & would/will risk me out if necessary. My RE is great but seems to be following a flow chart to decide my risk factors.

Like I said, I'm confused & would love to hear thoughts on this. I know only I can make this decision but it helps to hear the perspectives of others. Thank you!

Well, do you trust the midwife to do what is right for you and the baby? I look at having a baby as watching the baby. As s/he grows and then keeping mother and baby safe as baby comes into the world.

A good midwife will have your best interest in mind always. So if you need a Dr then you go. I think that is true with any mother & baby high risk or not.

Thank you @Nazsmum! I do trust the midwife! She is so great & has calmly guided me through 2 natural miscarriages. Also, I feel that with minimal information (i.e. Before I've even been in to see her) she has accurately described what I've been going through in terms of the vanishing twin & associated risks. She's not told me anything different from the doctor (minus the unnecessary scare tactics). Now, to convince my husband that this is what's right for me & baby... And, yes, I think she'd risk me out any time if necessary--she works with an OB & MFM when she needs to & even has privileges at a hospital (albeit one that is quite far from me). Thanks so much!

Hi @Nazsmum, thanks for checking in on me!

I decided to go with the home birth midwife practice. They've been great & sent me for a 16 week ultrasound with their MFM, just out of an abundance of caution. Everything looked good & even the doctor said she expected this to proceed as a normal singleton pregnancy. Twin A is still there but reabsorbing. We decided against an amnio & the new MFM didn't even bat an eye. I feel good & I'm already at 18 1/2 weeks! DH was able to go to my last midwife appointment & I think he feels confident with them as well.

Thank you! I did have a healthy baby girl at home last summer. It's hard to believe she's almost 7 months old! I feel very grateful the rest of my pregnancy was very unremarkable. [emoji1]
