I'm due next week and I just found out my iron levels are still pretty low. I tested a month ago and they were at 106, normal is 120. Since I tested so low I've been taking 20 mls of Floridex twice a day as well as an iron supplement at lunch time. I just got my new test results back and they're now 103 -.- I'm guessing there's not much I can do in a week, but my midwives brought up pitocin after delivery. I've had my midwives for my last 3 births and they know I don't want it, so they'll hold off unless the see a real problem. Has anyone delivered while anemic or used pitocin? I've never had a problem with blood loss before but I'm starting to wonder if I should just accept the pitocin. Thanks for your advice.
Just talking off the top of my head here - but I think if you take vitamin C with iron - your body is supposed to absorb the iron better. Just thought I'd throw that out there for you. Good luck!
yeah make sure you're not taking dairy within 2hrs of the iron supplements.
also try nettles and vit K to boost your clotting factor... also foic acid is very important to building red blood cells and vit B.
that said I'm always anemic never had a normal reading, pregnant or not. I had one case of heavy bleeding, not really hemorrage just a ittle heavy, and cayenne powder under the tongue took care of it in a few seconds.
I was borderline anemic with my twin pregnancy. I started taking Floridex but I didn't get tested again before delivery so I really don't know if it helped. I had a water birth and when they were transferring me to my bed I guess there was a huge gush of blood and my midwives made a split second decision to give me a shot of pitocin, since hemmoraging is common with twin births. In the end it turned out to be unneccessary but I did not mind that they gave me the shot. I figure it is better to be safe.
I took Yellow Dock tinctures when Floradix did not work. But when I had my homebirth I was borderline anemic. I didnt take enough Yellow Dock in time.
are you talking about your platelet levels? if so, there is nothing you can do to build them - but it seems to me that if you're talking platelets, I wouldn't have an issue doing your birth with those numbers.
If you're talking hemoglobin and you mean 10.2, then that's pretty normal. see, your blood volume expands and you SHOULD see a drop in your hemoglobin levels. If you're taking Floradex, just keep taking it and don't worry. Your levels sound fine.
Low iron levels do not mean that you have a greater chance of bleeding. It's not been statistically evident.
I'm not sure, all I know is 103. My midwife didn't seem too worried just mentioned the pitocin. I would rather avoid it.
I know the iron levels won't cause a hemmorage but in the off chance I bleed a bit too much it could affect my levels even more. Is that true or not something to worry too much about?
After talking to my dr, I had to go in for something unrelated, I still feel comfortable avoiding the pitocin.
Can someone let me know why pitocin might be helpful if there is a potential for hemorraghing? Is it for after the labor to help the uterus clamp down?
My iron levels during my first pg were supposedly "normal," but they were only checked once during the pg, and it was lower for me. I had routine pitocin (at the hospital) after birth, and supposedly didn't bleed more than normal. But, I still ended up with post-partum anemia.
This probably doesn't help any and only confuses the issue more. Sorry!
I've heard that Liquid Chlorophyll helps with iron absorbtion. I have been taking it for a couple months and love it. I haven't had any problems with iron, but maybe that's why?
Worth looking into!
