I have read a few other mom's stories online about being at the OB's and their baby's heartrate fluctuating from 160-120 bpm or 70-130 and going up and down. One of these moms was referred to a "specialist".

I had a similar experience at my midwife appointment where my baby's HR went up to around 180, but back down to 120 in a matter of seconds, and then stayed at 120. My midwife was concerned, but didn't say why, which hasn't happened with my other two pregnancies, so it has me thinking:

Is there a wide range of normal for babies' HRs? What are some warning signs? What could it mean if there is a fluctuation in HR and when is HR in pregnancy a sign of a problem? Or HR in labor (can you tell cord is too tight or baby is in a poor position for birth by the HR?)

my mw said 120-160 is normal range. On Friday the baby first registered at 140 then at 150. S/He was trying to move away from the doppler, hence the higher heart rate.

When I listen with my fetoscope, it sometimes seems soooo slow -- enough for me to think I am really hearing my own heartbeat so I take my pulse to compare. Then she starts moving and thumping around and it goes up to around 140. I always assume the slow rate is when she's sleeping ... when she starts moving about it gets faster.

Thanks for the responses, so far. Makes sense baby's HR decreases while moving less, and increases with movement.
