I've asked my dad (who has done some hobby wood working) to build me a birth stool. It's as much symbolic as it will be functional. I think asking him to do it helped ease the transition between his assumption we'd be birthing in a hospital and accepting our choice to home birth.

The trouble is I have not been able to find any plans or instructions on how one might go about building one. There was an old post on MDC that linked to instructions, but the link is broken. Does anyone know of a source that would be of help?

If we have to, we'll resort to purchasing a kit, but I was hoping for this to be more of an active project my dad could really put his heart into.

Thanks!

mom to DD and one on the way, wife since 1997 to a great guy

Find a picture of one you like. The basic concept of the stool is pretty straight forward so he should be able to work from an illustration.

The height of the stool, judging by pictures of women using them should be about an inch higher than your foot to knee distance, but the other dimensions seem to vary from stool to stool. Play around with sitting on different things to get a good feel for what you like to help give your dad dimensions to work with.
