Well, I am kind of having a lot of mixed feelings based on my sister's birth experience that happened this past weekend. (Mind you, I am 33 weeks and planning a hb in July!) My family has not been supportive of this hb and now my mom is finally coming around and realizing the "system" of OB's and the medical field. I know my mom is completely behind me now.. its truly awesome. I have two sisters, one had an induced labor, which led to an eppi, which led to fetal distress, then an "emergency C-sec" ... my other sister just went into labor in Sunday (2 days "overdue") and had her 7 lb 11 oz baby girl at the hospital with an eppi but no induction, no C-sec. I was relieved to hear this news as that's one sister who didn't get cut for no reason.

Baby Tatum has been a screamer since she was born, nothing has seemed to calm her, help her, etc etc. The nurses at the hospital have been trying to "help" my sister nurse, but their idea of helping is giving the baby some formula first, then trying to get her to latch on (eyeroll here!) my mom finally saw the light, and stood up for my sister, and told the nurse to leave and that if we needed help, we would page for a nurse, when the nurse informed us it's their policy that they have to be there while you nurse (yes, pick your jaw up off the floor!) My sister is given no chance to try on her own, she even said let me get comfortable first, and the nurse said it's not about your comfort, just the baby's comfort!! What bs! So needless to say, my sister feels horrible and incapable of nursing, and I feel heartbroken because they just keep taking the baby to the nursery and formula feeding her! It's like my sister has no power or control.

And also, my sister had a big issue her whole pregnancy with pain related to the nerve in your back (forget what it's called) and the doctor told her to stop taking Tylenol since it didn't work, and gave her narcotics. My mom and I told her to question this, as obviously narcotics can be dangerous, but she said her OB reassured her there wouldn't be issues.... and guess what?? Now they are saying the reason Tatum is crying and screaming all the time is because she is having withdrawls from the narcotics that she is ADDICTED to!! They are transferring her to the children's hospital where they will put her back on them, then ween her off so it's less traumatic!!! I feel so bad for my sister and this baby, and I know it just confirms my choice to have a hb, and I know my mom sees and understands it too, but I am just hurting for my sister, and for Tatum. It's just that feeling of helplessness I guess.

It's so hard to see people we care about suffer, especially our sisters and helpless little babies. I'm so sorry that you and your family are going through this!

I'm so sorry for her... She should have told them she's not a hospital so luckily the policy didn't apply to her.
What horrid treatment, she should file a complaint.

I’m so sorry to read this. It’s so hard to watch the people we love be manipulated by the medical establishment. I hope she can get nursing going and stick with it. Can you help at all or is she just trusting the doctors?

I have similar issues with my sisters birth. She wanted to go all natural and ended up with induction, epidural, episiotomy, forceps delivery and 3rd degree tears. It was so hard to listen to her talk about the birth because she honestly believes she needed all that stuff and she was “lucky” to avoid a c-section since her baby was so big.

Big hugs to you mama and I hope you can support her.

Oh good grief! Narcotics or go see a chiropractor for sciatica...yeah, I can COMPLETELY understand why narcotics seemed like such a better choice!

I wish your sister the best!

I was on heavy heavy pain meds my whole pregnancy including via IV round the clock for the 3 weeks before delivery (I was awaiting a bowel resection, appendectomy, and gallbladder removal) Sage was born 8 weeks early and the neonatologist said the best thing for her if she were facing withdrawl was to continue giving me the narcotics and have me nurse her so she got the reduced dose naturally and was able to nurse. Maybe someone can suggest this?

I'm so sorry to hear that. Its heartbreaking, especially the part about the drugs. People are way too trusting of doctors and dont allow themselves to use their own common sense.

About the nursing: maybe you could get some help from the La Leche Leauge, or even a professional lactation consultant? I think they have local chapters all over which you can find on their website. I've never had any interation with them but I've only ever heard good things. I'm sure they would be more knowledgable and helpful then the nurses, but maybe would get more respect in a hospital setting then you and your mom seem to be getting.

Maybe insurance would even cover for a professional consultant sense breast fed babies are so much healthier long term.

Best of luck to you & your family.

Im so sorry about what happened to your sister. The part about the baby crying and being addicted to narcotics brought me to tears. No baby should have to go through that.

Does the hospital have a IBCLC? Or is there one in your city you could call in? It utterly sucks what they've done (those nurses should be ashamed of themselves), but reassure your sister that some babies have gone on to nurse with no problems even after getting bottles for a couple weeks.

ETA: Oh thank goodness she's at home.

OMG - I feel so sorry for your sister and niece. I hope you have a local La Leche League. I also hope that your sister will file a complaint with EVERYONE about this. That is ridiculous the way she was treated.
