Hi, I just read over the "preposterous comments" thread- and realized I don't know how the mw checks on the cord while you're in the tub! I had ds in a tub at home w/no problems except a very loooong pushing stage, but I guess all the comments about cords being wrapped around the babies are making me wonder.

I don't remember getting out of the tub except for once. How can they tell? :

I had a waterbirth at the hospital two weeks ago and she had the cord wrapped around her neck once. They periodically checked me with a doppler (which I hated- every time my midwife touched me with it I'd have another contraction) and at one point the heartrate dropped, that's how they knew. My midwife didn't tell me what was going on but said, ok with this next contraction let's just push this baby all the way out... afterwards she told me why. Baby was fine and my waterbirth was amazing! I labored for two hours at home in the tub, and gave birth one hour after I arrived at the hospital! A far cry from my first birth- 3 day induced labor with a broken tailbone, vacuum extraction, and 4th degree tears!

UGH, a friend just had a 36 hour induced labor ending w/a c-section. WHY are drs in such a hurry to induce?!?

That makes sense about the heartrate. And, aren't you glad the mw did NOT tell you of her concerns at that moment? Fear can be very inhibiting!

I saw a video at my Bradley training of a waterbirth with a problem wrapped cord. I think it was around a few times, or very tight. I forget the exact issue, but the midwife slid her fingers in to check, like they usually do and was concerned enough that she cut the cord before the rest of the baby was born. Very quickly and neatly, no big fuss, all underwater.
