hello! my best friend from high school is preg w/ her 2nd child. she told me she's having a scheduled c-sec bcuz she had a shattered pelvis. now i don't remember if that was cuz of her 1st birth or it might have been from a car wreck??

so is it absolutely necessary to have a c-sec bcuz of this? w/ her first baby she was induced and in pushing stage of labor so long that she had a c-sec.

i'm just trying to help my friend keep her options open, since she seems disappointed.

tia.

If she was in a car accident and had a shattered pelvis, yes, she'll need a c/sec. The reconstruction work (often with things wired and screwed together) doesn't allow for vag. delivery.

I've known a woman who had her pelvis shattered in a car accident, and gave birth vaginally. My understanding is it is dependant on how the pelvis mends and what positions the woman is pushing in.

If the car accident happened before her first birth, and she was in several good pelvis-opening positions for pushing, they probably decided the pelvis had mended into a shape that wouldn't allow for vaginal birth, as can happen sometimes. Shattered pelvis is a nasty business. If the accident happened between the births, if it were me, I would press for a trial of pushing, or at least a 3D scan of the pelvis to see if it might allow for the baby to be born vaginally. It can happen! Of course, repeat Cesarean births are becoming the norm in some areas, so this may be easier said than done with some care providers.

Best wishes to you and your friend. and happy birthing!
