We're planning on a hospital birth, but my first 2 labors went very fast. I want to be prepared just in case we don't make it to the hospital- any good books on this topic? (I'd love a homebirth, but no way to afford, even if we made payments.)

Special Delivery, I forget who it's by, it's pretty dated, from the 70's I think, but the info is still good. I think I got mine used on amazon. It might be out of print I can't remember. But anyway I got it basically for the same reason you wanted it. I had a very fast labor, and live a distance from the hospital. It was pretty good.

Mom to ds 9 dd 7 : and dd 3/08 : if I can I go to

wow, i wish i had this problem!

no books to recommend here, but i did want to reassure you that the majority of precipitous (really fast) labors result in a happy baby and mom. the only general complication i've heard of is that once in a while, the fast labor can really wipe out mom and cause her to bleed more than she should. if you're willing to call 911, you'll be fine in any case.

good luck!

Emergency Childbirth , by Gregory White, a must textbook reading by every EMT and taxi driver in the country.

It should be read by everyone.

"The Birth Partner" by Penny Simkin has a great, brief section on what to do if the baby is born 'unexpectedly..." it's a good summary over two pages (though I don't have the newest edition of this book).

I don't have a book recommendation, but I had someone tell me this once:

Quote:
"emergency" childbirth is actually really easy: don't drop the baby, don't cut the cord, don't pull on the cord, put the baby on the mom's chest, skin to skin, and cover them both up and keep them warm, call the midwife asap. that's all.
Or, call whoever or transport to the hospital if that's your choice.

#3 due early April, definitely VBAC, possibly at home

Great book--that's what my hb mws give their clients during week 37, in case they can't attend the birth.

What does that book say?

My mw told dh, "and put a hat on." :LOL Ha ha ha, he thought she meant a hat on HIM, rather than the new babe!
